Increasing health equity with Denver neighborhoods
About us
Denver Food Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit in Denver, Colorado. Our mission is to produce health equity with Denver neighborhoods. We utilize fresh edible whole fruits & veggies that would would otherwise be thrown away from retailers & directly distribute them to neighborhoods in the Denver Metro area with barriers to healthy food access. All of our No Cost Grocery Programs are co-created and led by residents of the communities! Programs are located at schools, community centers, and after school programs. Health equity: At DFR we believe that health is a right that should be enjoyed by everyone. The current system creates health gaps between people, particularly impacting low-income people and people of color. There is no blanket solution to improve the health of our communities. Instead, we need to be intentional about creating access to the services and education each person needs to make informed health decisions. We believe in a world in which a person’s health is not determined by their race, income, or geography. Food security: Each individual deserves to have control of their own food situation. This means to have enough food for themselves and their families, and to not stress about running out. Whether this self determination is made possible through increased wages or increased access, our communities deserve to have the amount and type of food that best serves them. Integration of feedback: DFR believes in constant learning and improvement. We recognize that we alone do not have the answers. Lasting solutions will only be formed through consistent and authentic engagement with people who are experiencing the issues we exist to address. DFR is deferential to the perspectives of these individuals and holds them to the highest regard. We are also informed by evidence-based, scientific research and internal evaluation practices. Where all three of these perspectives overlap (community, scientific, and internal) lies the framework for our actions.

Meet Jes, one of our newest volunteers, who braved their first food recovery shift on an e-bike! 🚴🥬 Our Volunteer Coordinator Meg joined Jes on their first shift to recover surplus catering trays from an event downtown and deliver them straight to Family Star Montessori, where they host a public No Cost Grocery Program. Meg recounted, “Jes forgot to use the assist on the e-bike for the first 5 miles and still smoked me going down the path!” Thankfully, Jes remembered to turn on the electric assist just in time for the hill leading up to Family Star! Want to join the fun and make an impact? Sign up to volunteer at https://lnkd.in/gUGjTbpT! #VolunteerSpotlight #FoodRecovery #CommunityImpact #NoCostGroceries #NoCostGroceryPrograms

Spaghetti squash isn’t just a delicious and nutritious option—it represents how we thoughtfully coordinate with our No Cost Grocery Program partners to ensure surplus food aligns with the cultural preferences and needs of each community we serve. This intentional approach fosters dignity, connection, and relevance in every delivery. Today is one of my favorite days of the year--Colorado Gives Day! How great is it that we live in a state that has a special day for supporting local nonprofits? This evening, my family will sit down and make donations to organizations that are meaningful to us (we're curious to see what my 6-year-old picks this year!). Of course, Project Angel Heart is at the top of our list! But this year we'll also be supporting amazing organizations like Denver Food Rescue, Cobalt Advocates, Inside Out Youth Services, and Conservation Colorado. Who are you supporting this Colorado Gives Day? Find your favorite cause or causes and give BIG today!

TOMORROW is Colorado Gives Day, and we’re cooking up something special! 🍽️ Join Jamie Kathleen Anderson, our Director of Operations, LIVE on Instagram and Facebook from 3–4 PM MST as she cooks with recovered groceries, including spaghetti squash—a unique and often unfamiliar item at our No Cost Grocery Programs. Community members have shared that they often aren’t sure how to prepare it, but that’s the beauty of NCGPs: they’re so rooted in community that they inspire connection, dignity, and the opportunity to ask each other for tips and share ideas. Every dollar you give on Colorado Gives Day goes further thanks to the statewide incentive fund—and helps us recover more food, reduce emissions, and share fresh, nutritious groceries with our neighbors. 💚 Donate here: https://lnkd.in/grnBY_2F #ColoradoGivesDay #FoodRescue #FoodRecovery #FoodJustice #HealthEquity #Sustainability #ZeroWaste #DenverFoodRescue #NoCostGroceries
