Human trafficking is a serious and pervasive issue, especially for children. Businesses, particularly in industries like travel and hospitality, must take an active role in combating this crime. Former dancer Chang Chun-Ko, who began performing with the group at just 11 years old, claims she endured exploitative conditions including grueling 18-hour workdays, inadequate pay, restricted family contact, and neglect of medical needs. These allegations underscore a pressing issue: the exploitation of children in performing arts. No child should have to endure such hardships in pursuit of their passion. 💸 Money laundering techniques 💸 ➡️ Fentanyl and synthetic opioids (FATF report summary) 💉 💊 Organized crime groups are fueling a synthetic opioid crisis, which has contributed to hundreds of thousands of deaths by overdose in the past decade. In Canada and the US alone, the trafficking of fentanyl is fueling an overdose epidemic, claiming around 80k lives a year. In the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, similar drugs are causing regional public health emergencies with growing rates of addiction. 📈 ⛓️ Synthetic opioids supply chains are diverse, and so are the methods used to launder the proceeds. There does not appear to be a single global business model. Rather, the methods vary on a country by country and drug by drug basis. Criminals who traffic in synthetic opioids use a range of methods to move the illicit proceeds across borders, including: 📌 bulk cash smuggling 📦 📌 cash couriers 📌 trade-based money laundering 🚢 📌 unauthorized money or value transfer services 📌 money brokers 🧑💻 Additionally, criminal groups use dark web vendor sites to market their products. In some cases, they even take payment through virtual assets, some of which are anonymity-enhancing. 😶🌫️ These digital assets are often quickly converted into fiat currency. 🐚 Traffickers use shell companies to launder proceeds, but also to procure drugs, precursor chemicals and production equipment. Indeed, criminals use precursor chemicals to manufacture drugs, instead of getting it directly from the producers. This relatively recent trend can make it difficult to detect suspicious financial activity. 🔍 🔀 Many authorities do not fully understand the global money flows from opioids. In most jurisdictions, relevant authorities look at opioids trafficking through a domestic lens.
