We can’t let the year end without thanking the Queen of South Dallas, Ms. Willie Mae Coleman for supporting DW’s 5th annual Best of Black Dallas awards ceremony with her precious archive paper from 1963. Coleman not only advocates for the #blackpress but also worked under DW’s founder, Mr. Tony Davis during the Civil Rights era. She even protested alongside him and other DW staff, while her mother watched her two young children. When our CEO and Publisher were tasked to find archives, it was a tad harder than anticipated. After help from former DW members and a few conversations with the local elders, they got it done. We thank you Miss Willie Mae Coleman! Proving once again that we are nothing without the community that supports us. #iamdw #blackpress #bestofblackdallas #blackcommunity

Dear Fathers organization recently hosted its annual pregame panel at the American Airlines Center, sponsored by Anthem Strong Families ASF. The event, which focused on mental health and leaving a lasting legacy, featured a panel of distinguished individuals, including Nico Harrison, Kalvin Bridgewater, Lubbock D. Smith III, and Charles Dillon. Marketing executive Dessie Brown moderated the panel, sharing his personal experiences as a father and son. He emphasized the importance of carrying on his father's legacy for his children and grandchildren. Lubbock D. Smith III spoke about his approach to fatherhood, emphasizing the importance of preparing his daughter and son for the world and allowing them to be their own men. Sean Reed, the Dallas Mavericks Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, highlighted the event's importance as an opportunity for Black men to connect and develop as fathers. He also spoke about the organization's dedication to supporting initiatives like Dear Fathers, which provide resources and a supportive community for Black fathers. The organization has also launched a new initiative, Dads To Doulas, which is dedicated to empowering Black men and expectant fathers with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for their families from pregnancy to infancy. What are your thoughts on the role of organizations like Dear Fathers in supporting and empowering fathers? How can we continue to support and encourage fathers to be the best they can be? https://lnkd.in/dY8H2cmt

Kandon Phillips, a producer and engineer, believes that the lack of investment in arts education has been a major issue for recording artists from Dallas. He attributes the city's creativity-drain to the lack of investment in arts education across the nation, including within school districts like Dallas Independent. The South Dallas Cultural Ctr has taken a proactive approach to addressing this issue by providing a central meeting place for local talent to meet, collaborate, develop and grow. The center's extensive creative programming has already had a significant impact on the community, providing much-needed resources for young artists and musicians. The free studio time initiative has already empowered several local artists, including Christian Johnson and Hailee Dyer, who have used the studio to record, develop their skills in music production and engineering, and launch their music education nonprofit. This initiative not only provides a space for creative expression but also exposes young people to industry professionals and the technical aspects of music production. It's a step in the right direction, providing a much-needed platform for local talent to thrive. What are your thoughts on the role of arts education in fostering creativity and innovation in communities? Do you think initiatives like this can help bridge the gap between resource-starved artists and the broader creative industry? In a significant move to avoid a potential government shutdown, Congress passed a spending bill to fund federal agencies until early March 2025. This stopgap measure, known as a continuing resolution (CR), ensures that government agencies can continue to operate, thereby avoiding the potential disruption that a shutdown could cause. The bill, signed into law by President Joe Biden, extends funding for certain federal projects and activities until January 19, 2024, and for others until February 2, 2024. This legislation is crucial for several reasons, including the continuity of essential services, economic stability, public trust, impact on federal employees, international standing, and long-term planning and projects. The bill includes provisions such as an extension of the 2018 Farm Bill for another year, $21 billion in disaster assistance and market relief for farmers, and authorization for year-round sales of E15, a gasoline blend with 15% ethanol. These provisions reflect ongoing negotiations and political compromises. The temporary measure reflects the political landscape, with lawmakers from both parties highlighting their "wins" in the bill, while debates over long-term fiscal policies and priorities are expected to continue into the new year. What are your thoughts on this recent government spending bill and its potential impact on the economy and public trust? Do you believe that the bill will effectively address the challenges facing the government, or do you think more comprehensive measures are needed? https://lnkd.in/gv6jGk4x
