About us
Cultivo accelerates investment into nature at scale. We do this by showing how investing in natural capital can generate healthy financial returns that are good for nature and society. - We use proprietary algorithms and remote sensor technologies to identify high quality projects and forecast the natural capital returns. - We then package those projects into investment products for financial institutions and corporations to invest in. - The investment finances sustainable activities that restore and protect nature, such as regenerative grazing or forest management. - Cash flows from the natural capital flows (e.g. carbon or water offsets) are generated by these activities, providing reliable long term income to the project and financial returns to the investors.

Financial Times recently reported on the “increase in engagement and awareness” in the financial industry regarding the value of biodiversity, particularly in terms of its importance to sustaining the global economy. Cultivo's co-founder and CEO Manuel Pinuela, PhD expressed our support for this movement and its benefits to nature in a recent post on LinkedIn.
I’m encouraged to see the steady growth in biodiversity financing, however the gap is still very large. According to BloombergNEF: Biodiversity finance has risen to $208bn a year from $166bn three years ago. But this still falls far short of the so-called “biodiversity financing gap”: an annual $700bn shortfall in funding needed to reverse biodiversity decline by 2030. At Cultivo, we are working with investors who recognise the opportunity of investing in nature. If you’re an institutional investor and would like to learn more about the opportunity for investing in nature as a new type of infrastructure asset class please message me. I fully agree with the Financial Times. “The opportunity for investors — and for planetary health — is large.” https://lnkd.in/ee7ErU7w

Thanks again to Jason Rissman and the Invested in Climate podcast, who recently interviewed our CEO and co-founder Manuel Pinuela, PhD. The episode dropped just this morning! Their conversation dives into Manuel's motivation for co-founding Cultivo, and explores critical issues in the natural capital and ecosystem regeneration world. Definitely worth a listen! #nature #investinnature #naturalcapital #landscaperegeneration #naturebasedsoultions
Let’s talk about #nature – the #forests, #land, #oceans, #biodiversity, and #ecosystem that make this planet liveable and, if you ask me, quite worth saving. Nature regulates our climate – and stewarding nature well could contribute 20-30% of our emissions reduction needs. It’d also support livelihoods around the world and help prevent the mass extinction of many of our planet’s species. #Naturebasedsolutions often sound simple – planting and protecting forests, farming in ways that improve soil health, restoring wetlands – but require sophisticated techniques to measure and track their impact. The lack of good nature monitoring systems has contributed to a $700 billion global financing gap and an inability of private sector investors to really lean into this opportunity. Currently, just 15% of investment in nature-based solutions comes from the private sector. This is where a young company called Cultivo comes in. Cultivo uses technology to understand the investment opportunity for nature-based solutions. Having just raised $14 million of venture capital, they’re ready to scale. I was thrilled to speak with Cultivo Founder and CEO Manuel Pinuela, PhD. We discussed Manuel’s background as a repeat entrepreneur, how he came to found Cultivo, the technology that sets them apart, the potential they see, and much more. I learned a lot and became a quick fan of Cultivo’s work. Hope you enjoy this episode of Invested in Climate. It’s our last of 2024, so I’m wishing you all happy holidays. I hope you all get to spend some time resting and recharging – perhaps including some time in nature – and gear up for the challenges ahead. Check out our CEO and co-founder Manuel Pinuela, PhD on the Invested in Climate podcast with Jason Rissman, which came out just this morning! Among other topics, Manuel talks about what inspired him to co-found Cultivo, what constitutes “degraded land,” why we’re focusing our efforts on regenerating ecosystems like grasslands and forests, and the ecological and financial benefits of investing in nature-based solutions. It's a great conversation, and it explores some critical issues in the natural capital and ecosystem regeneration movements. #nature #investinnature #naturalcapital #landscaperegeneration #naturebasedsoultions
Great conversation with Jason Rissman on the Invested in Climate podcast. Jason and I spoke about what inspired me to co-found Cultivo, what constitutes “degraded land,” why we’re focusing our efforts on regenerating ecosystems like grasslands and forests, and the ecological and financial benefits of investing in nature-based solutions. We also dived into how Cultivo’s accelerating investment in nature by using our proprietary technology to rapidly and accurately analyze landscapes’ potential for regeneration, how we ensure local and indigenous communities are engaged in and see the benefits from regeneration projects, and why we’re prioritizing regenerating degraded land over conserving already intact ecosystems. Most importantly, we discussed the incredible potential of nature-based solutions to increase resilience and what the nature-based solutions market needs to do to unlock investment at scale. Thanks for the invitation, Jason! https://lnkd.in/ef_ft47t https://lnkd.in/e8rwXbQ7 #nature #investinnature #naturalcapital #landscaperegeneration #naturebasedsoultions

The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification – aka COP16 UNCCD – wraps up today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 🌍 Government and private sector attendees have stressed the need to allocate more funds to land conservation and nature restoration, and emphasized the global economic development and job creation that could come with those investments. 🌳 But while investments in sustainable energy and transport continue to be significant, investment in regenerative agriculture and forestry, and other sustainable land uses has lagged. This is unfortunate, as according to Tillem Burlace of the World Economic Forum, “research…indicates that transitioning to a sustainable ‘nature economy’ could unlock $10 trillion in business opportunities and create 395 million jobs by 2030.” 👏 This sounds like a win-win to us. Let’s do this! #investinnature #environment #naturalcapital #sustainability #nature https://lnkd.in/dy2M4qhE

Happy birthday to us! Cultivo turns five today! 🥳 To mark the day, our CEO and co-founder Manuel Pinuela, PhD shared his thoughts on Cultivo's work in landscape regeneration and accelerating the flow of investment into nature. 🌿 Here's to a great first five years! 🎂 #nature #investinnature #naturalcapital #biodiversity #sustainability
Today marks Cultivo’s fifth birthday! My co-founder James Clifton and I officially formed Cultivo as a Public Benefit Corporation five years ago today. I am extremely proud of what Cultivo and our ecosystem of partners have achieved over these first five years. We’re on our way to deliver our purpose of regenerating 1% of the world’s degraded lands into health ecosystems. We haven’t yet reached “escape velocity,” but we continue to accelerate on all fronts. Cultivo’s growth has always been guided by a commitment to learning and adapting. As we celebrate this milestone, I’ve been reflecting on lessons learned—both from our early days and from more recent experiences. One theme consistently stands out: Capital flows to nature at the speed of trust. This principle resonates deeply with our landowners, investors, off-takers, and the incredible team at Cultivo. Thanks from all of us at Cultivo for your trust, and for joining us in the mission to regenerate our planet.

Today is World Soil Day, and that makes it the perfect day for you to meet Mary Cvetkovic-Jones (Hodgson), Cultivo’s Soil Scientist! 👋 Mary is an expert in soil carbon, biogeochemistry, and grassland ecology, and she has focused on grassland ecosystems for nearly eight years. She holds a PhD in Soil Science from Lancaster University, where her research examined the impact of fire and grazing on soil biogeochemical properties in African grasslands. At Cultivo, Mary leads the design and implementation of comprehensive soil processes for our nature-based projects worldwide. Based in Lancaster, in the North of England, Mary enjoys hiking and running in the Lake District. Her love for the outdoors – and soil! – drives her commitment to combating climate change and fostering a sustainable future for all, and she’s eager to apply her expertise and passion to impactful environmental solutions that benefit the planet and future generations. 🌎 Says Mary, “On this World Soil Day, let's recognise soil as a powerful tool in addressing climate change and global challenges. Healthy, well-managed soil is the foundation of nature-based solutions, boosting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and strengthening resilience for our ecosystems and economies alike. Investing in soil health is investing in a sustainable future.” 🪱 Check out these pictures of Mary in action, in Kruger National Park, South Africa. In the first, she’s collecting ash for analysis of pyrogenic carbon, and in the other she’s using an infa-red gas analyser to measure soil respiration following fires. 🤯 Learn more about the Cultivo team here: https://lnkd.in/dD6JxNC #investinnature #naturalcapital #biodiversity #sustainability #nature #worldsoilday

We firmly support today's COP29 statement from Nature4Climate; There is no climate solution without nature. 👏 "Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can provide up to one-third of the required climate mitigation by 2030 and are fundamental to underpin climate adaptation and resilience. Additionally, over half of the global economy is highly or moderately dependent on natural resources and healthy ecosystems, with forests alone supporting the livelihoods of 20% of the global population and billions relying on wetlands and the ocean for water and food." 🌎
Today is Nature Day at #COP29 and we’re making ourselves heard. More than 80 organizations have come together to call on the UNFCCC Parties to properly recognize and finance nature’s role in addressing the climate crisis, or risk undermining global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5C. 📣 The message is simple: We need to rapidly decarbonize the world’s economy toward zero emissions and halt the destruction of natural ecosystems.
