For the first time in history, climate activists held an entire season of sustained civil disobedience protests targeting Wall Street and big banks for their role in fueling the climate crisis. Deemed the “Summer of Heat”, hundreds of Environmental Justice leaders and advocates from the Gulf South gathered in New York City to challenge banks and insurers of the toxic petrochemical industries in their communities. “Insurance companies and banks have been involved with the sacrifice of our people since the days of enslavement,” Jo Banner, M.A. of the Descendants Project said. “Our communities can no longer bear the burden of poor climate, poor health, poor environment because of the pollutants that they continue to support.” Organizers visited BlackRock, Bank of America, KKR, MUFG, and Mizuho Wrapping headquarters to demand corporations stop financing environmental racism and climate destruction Read the full story in the latest issue of 📣Peace & Riot 📣 https://lnkd.in/gxTJ-CYr Watch the documentary produced by Texas Campaign for the Environment ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ggHVhicK 📷 Michael McKenzie M.Ed. 1 - Gulf South Delegates from Donaldsonville, Louisiana 2 - Gulf South Delegates from Texas 3 - Manny Rollerson, Founder of the Freeport Haven Project 4 - Juan Mancias, Chief of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas 5 - Climate Conversations of Brazoria County #summerofheat #peopleoverplastic #peopleoverprofit #environmentaljustice #environmentalinjustice #environementalracism #canceralley #nyc #divest #climate #climateactivism #climateaction #climatejustice #gulfsouth #gulfsouthrising #frontlinesrising #solidarity #peaceandriot #zine
