Many of us don't know or understand how someone becomes unsheltered. Just this month, we have helped two victims of domestic violence and their children get in stable housing. We assisted a family living in an encampment. We helped a 74-year-old woman who was living in her car. Another family was traumatized when there was a violent shooting in the neighborhood. We helped another man and his 16-year-old son secure housing after he suffered a major injury that prevented him from working, causing him to fall behind in his rent. In most of these cases, the families we are helping can afford to pay the monthly rent. The biggest obstacle they face is paying the security deposit. And that's where our Foundation has stepped in. None of us can do this work alone. We partner with agencies such as Oak City Cares, The Women's Center of Wake County, Healing Transitions, Wake Tech Foundation's Fostering Bright Futures program, Urban Ministries of Wake County & the Helen Wright Center and Henderson Collegiate. We need your partnership — and your donation — to help us continue to assist those who need us and deserve another chance. Especially during this season of giving, we are happy to announce that we recently awarded a grant to a young mother of three who needed temporary help to get back on her feet. While complications from recent child-birth caused her to miss more work than intended, she fell behind on her rent. By coordinating with our partners at Healing Transitions, we helped her with her monthly rent through a transitional housing grant. She now feels confident she will be able to maintain her rent moving forward. We wish her all the best! Transitional housing grants are financial awards provided to support individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or other crisis situations. This Giving Tuesday, we are happy to share that the Cooper Charitable Foundation was recently able to help a woman and her service dog find housing, after they lost everything in a house fire! Through our partners at The Helen Wright Center run by Urban Ministries of Wake County, we were able to provide a grant to help this duo with prorated rent and some furniture. The Cooper Charitable Foundation offers Housing Stability Grants to help people secure housing or stay in their homes. A pregnant working mother and her child were facing homelessness, unable to secure a place in any local shelter due to long waitlists and limited resources. They struggled with motel stays they couldn’t afford and occasionally even slept in a coworker’s unfinished basement. Thanks to a grant from the Cooper Charitable Foundation, she now has safe housing. Our partners at Oak City Cares are also helping her build financial stability through budgeting and credit counseling, while she also receives prenatal care and support from local services. Breaking Free: Overcoming Domestic Violence and Housing Instability A father and his young son, escaping a life of domestic violence, had been stuck in the cycle of temporary hotel stays. Even with a steady income and despite his hard work, stable housing remained out of reach until they reached out to Oak City Cares, one of our dear partners. Thanks to a grant from The Cooper Foundation, they’ve now moved into a safe, permanent home. With our help covering move-in expenses, life is smiling on them once again.
