When Barbara Piette got involved with CLF, she found the hope her family desperately needed during her daughter Esther Lovett’s prolonged struggle with Post-Concussion Syndrome. Today, with our Boston Advisory Board, Barbara and Esther continue to support CLF’s mission and provide hope to patients around the world battling symptoms of concussion and suspected CTE. Our vision is a world without CTE, and concussion safety without compromise.
About us
The Concussion Legacy Foundation was founded in 2007 by Chris Nowinski, Ph.D. and Dr. Robert Cantu in order to bring the concussion crisis into the public eye. Dr. Nowinski, a former WWE professional wrestler and Harvard football player, set a goal with Dr. Cantu to change how concussions were understood and handled in sports. Now in our tenth year, the Concussion Legacy Foundation is more dedicated than ever to solving the concussion crisis by advancing the study, treatment, and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes, military veterans, and other at-risk groups. We work to achieve our mission through education and prevention programs, advocacy, policy development, and support of research at the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank. Created in 2008 as a partnership between the Concussion Legacy Foundation, Boston University, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank conducts cutting-edge clinical and pathological research on the long-term effects of repetitive brain trauma, with a focus on the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank is the single greatest CTE research resource in the world, housing 70% of global CTE cases. Together, we are committed to creating a world without CTE, and concussion safety without compromise.

We had a wonderful Thursday evening in the Chicago suburbs celebrating Holidays and Heroes! CLF CEO Christopher Nowinski, PhD and our Chicago Advisory Board recognized 3 young individuals who have courageously faced the challenges of concussion and helped raise awareness in their schools and communities. Congratulations to Jack Heinlein, Nicolina Tarsitano, and Olivia Turner, who all received a CLF Resilience Award! We also honored advisory board member Lewis Simon with the CLF Community Mentor Award for providing crucial education and selfless support for young athletes affected by brain injuries. Many thanks to the team at Madame ZuZu's Teahouse, our event sponsors, and all who attended for supporting CLF’s efforts in the Chicago area and beyond! We're also grateful to Loc Nguyen for generously sharing his photography talents to capture the event. The full album can be viewed on our Facebook: https://lnkd.in/e-qCHdcs

Speaking at last week's Concussion Legacy Gala, NHLPA president Marty Walsh made headlines by announcing the union is forming its first-ever CTE Advisory Committee to help hockey players better understand CTE and the impact of concussions on the brain. As Marty said after receiving our 2024 Impact Award, "it’s important for us to really do research of our own, to create an opportunity for players to understand the full impact of CTE." It's hard to watch the brutal hit Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa took in late 2022 that caused a "fencing response" and led to him being taken off the field on a stretcher. The thing is, it didn't have to happen. Our CEO Christopher Nowinski, PhD has identified a new concussion sign called SHAAKE that would've provided doctors the evidence needed to diagnose Tua with a concussion just four days earlier against Buffalo. After that hit against the Bills, Tua shook his head multiple times before stumbling and falling. It's right there on the tape. SHAAKE could identify up to 33% of undiagnosed concussions - like Tua's against Buffalo - and that's why we're calling on sports and medical organizations to immediately add it to their list of potential concussion signs. Learn more about SHAAKE: https://lnkd.in/exqVj9-c

Led by CLF CEO Christopher Nowinski, PhD, concussion researchers have recognized a new concussion sign that could identify up to 33% of undiagnosed concussions. After a hit to the head, individuals sometimes quickly shake their head back and forth. Although it has been depicted in pop culture for decades, this motion has never been studied or named. It does not appear on any medical or sports organization’s list of potential concussion signs. Our new study says it should. For more details, check out our press release: https://bit.ly/SHAAKE

Concussion Legacy Foundation reposted this
Exciting day as we delivered the FIRST Australian Concussion Legacy Foundation #mediaproject at Carlton AFL football club. Journalism senior lecturer Dr Merryn Sherwood and I talked to Sports Media students about #concussion and #CTE, and then went into how to write and report about issues surrounding brain injuries in sport accurately, ethically, and responsibly. Hopefully the first of many #mediaproject courses to students and professionals in the industry and around #Australia #journalism #journalists #media #students #education #sport #brain #braininjury #brainhealth #science #sciencecommunication
