Mobilizing the power of philanthropy to build a racially equitable region where everyone prospers.
About us
The Greater Washington Community Foundation ignites the power of philanthropy, leads for community impact, and responds to critical community needs. For five decades, The Community Foundation has connected caring donors with nonprofits creating lasting change in DC, Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, and Prince George’s County. As the region’s largest local funder, we have invested more than $1.5 billion since 1973 to build racially equitable, just, and thriving communities where everyone prospers. Now, our strategic focus is to close our region’s racial wealth gap so that people of all races, places, and identities reach their full potential. As a community foundation, we keep our finger on the pulse of the issues and organizations that make a difference in our region. We have developed deep expertise in local philanthropy, strengthening the region’s critical nonprofits, and identifying opportunities to create meaningful change for our community.

Before he became a homeless advocate, Wesley Thomas had been living on the streets for nearly 30 years. He said people would choose sleeping in tents outdoors over shelters due to safety concerns. “I was safer on the street because we slept in a community,” he said. “We slept around people that we trusted.” When he took the tour at the Aston - a brand-new shelter in DC's Ward 2, Thomas said, “I almost cried.” https://lnkd.in/eN7ZVcc8

“Some people look at a young parent and see them as a problem,” Ribeiro-Yemofio of LIFT, Inc. shared. “We see them as the solution.” “Everyday I come to school, I get to show up for people,” Romero shares. “I feel like the work that I do is really making a difference – especially for these kids that really need someone who believes in them.” Romero is one of 140 City Year Washington, DC AmeriCorps members working to support the learning, social, and emotional growth of thousands of kids across DC’s public schools. She's also a single mother - an experience that she says has helped drive her to touch thousands of lives through a career in National Service. Now a new pilot program - LIFT As We Climb - hopes to empower more young parents like Romero to transform their communities through national service. https://lnkd.in/eeZsT6CH

"Dietitian Emily Frymark slid open a drawer inside a Children’s National Hospital clinic that looks as though it should store bandages or medicine to reveal a surprise: heaps of onions and garlic bulbs. The produce is part of the food pharmacy at the Northwest Washington hospital, where patients can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, pasta, cereal, canned foods and other supplies at their regular medical checkups. The program is one way the Capital Area Food Bank is bundling what it knows best — feeding people — with other basic services to help them manage health issues." https://lnkd.in/gjug2_p6

We are excited to share this incredible collaboration! Kaiser Permanente is teaming up with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas, along with an amazing advisory board of hospitals, local government, and nonprofits, to address a critical gap in our community.
