Lead with (community-team-student-customer) voice + choice Stop trying to figure out what "their" problems are. Quit trying to design solutions for "them." Be inclusive. We FAIL when we try to diagnose problems and design solutions FOR people. I would imagine that, like me, you’ve been in more than a few meetings or at more than a couple of conferences talking about what THEIR problems are, and how we can solve problems for THEM. All without any representation by THEM in the conversation. This is a perniciously easy trap to fall into. We all do it. We SUCCEED when we help the people (community members, team members, customers, students, clients, etc.) who are the most directly and contextually affected take a/ the lead role in diagnosing problems, prioritizing, and designing solutions. This is the most dignified approach. It’s the most effective and efficient approach. And it helps to empower the sense of agency and ownership that’s necessary for creativity to thrive and sustainability to become possible. The following Changemaking Trimtab (strategic principle) should help you both gain insights into some creative ways to practice this approach and have inclusive conversations about how you might apply leading with “community” voice and choice in your work. Be like George Costanza Sometimes "doing the opposite" is the best strategy. Give it a try. Dating myself, there's a classic episode from the TV show Seinfeld where George, the lovable loser in the show, sits down at a diner with his friend Jerry. He says something to the extent of, "Every instinct I've ever had in my life is wrong, so from now on I'm going to do the opposite." Soon after, he decides to test this new strategy and approaches an attractive woman at the nearby counter and says, "My name's George. I'm unemployed and I live with my parents." She responds with a smile, "I'm Victoria. Hi." Doing the opposite doesn’t just work in sitcoms. Often, when confronted with a wicked problem, the smartest thing to do is to flip the traditional approach on its head and do the exact opposite. The old way isn’t working, so why not try the opposite?! Why my new book (toolbox)? (1 of 12) For the next 12 days or so, I thought I'd share some of the WHYs of my new book to help you decide if it's right for you or others in your network/community. ONE: It will positively impact your team's/organization's culture. It will help you create/nurture a "changemaking culture." How? For reference, watch this explainer video from Harvard Business Review. I came across this matrix several years ago. It informs how I design tools/approaches and work with organizations. Three points from the research - 1. A majority of companies rank RESULTS and CARING at the top. The tools in the book are all collaborative conversation tools that are super simple to onboard with your team. Slot them into things you already do. They'll help you get more and better ideas (results) and, by including more team members in conversations, you demonstrate that you value their opinions and their professional growth (caring). 2. "Companies pursuing differentiation strategies prioritize LEARNING, PURPOSE, and ENJOYMENT." That's exactly what these tools and the mini-cases are built for. 3. "LEARNING differentiates companies with a strong emphasis on customer orientation" Yes the book is designed for this, AND these are "all teach, all learn" tools/frameworks that I designed/modified for specific customers and then put all in one place. They're also all about #empathy, the essence of effective customer orientation. 10 team tools for prioritization conversations Simple frameworks to help your team prioritize efforts, problems, opportunities, and future-proofing strategies In the words of Stephen Covey, “The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” No matter who you are - a corporate team, nonprofit team, student team, community group, conference participant team, etc. etc - you need to always be focused on prioritization.
