Smart manufacturing isn’t just about doing things better; it’s about redefining what ‘better’ means in a digital, sustainable world. What began with Industry 4.0’s ambitious vision—cyber-physical systems, IoT, and connected factories—has evolved into something more grounded, accessible, and human-centric. While Industry 4.0 focused on possibilities, today’s frameworks, like CESMII’s First Principles of Smart Manufacturing, focus on practicality. These principles offer a roadmap to make smart manufacturing achievable for everyone: 1. 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: Seamless information flow enables fast, decentralized decisions with real-time visibility. 2. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 & 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: Connected ecosystems collaborate to deliver products efficiently and on time. 3. 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Systems adapt easily to changing demands, enabling broad adoption across the value chain. 4. 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 & 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭: Optimizes energy use and supports reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling processes. 5. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞: Ensures secure connectivity, protecting data, IP, and systems from cyber threats. 6. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 & 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢-𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬: Moves from static reporting to proactive, real-time, semi-autonomous decisions. 7. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 & 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧: Empowers seamless communication across systems, devices, and partners. The shift reflects a decade of lessons learned: manufacturers need solutions that are scalable, resilient to disruptions, and environmentally responsible. CESMII doesn’t just ask, “What if?” It answers with, “Here’s how,” bridging the gap between visionary ideas and real-world implementation. Consumer & Industrial Products Global Practice Leader at West Monroe Partners

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Manufacturing Leadership Council Future of Manufacturing event, representing West Monroe, on how AI is empowering manufacturing ecosystems. It was an honor to share the stage with industry leaders CEO of CESMII John Dyck, CEO of Click Bond Karl Hutter, Professor Ali Shakouri, and Jeff Puma to discuss the opportunities and challenges of AI adoption in manufacturing.   Key takeaways from our conversation: 1️. Move now or become obsolete: Whether you’re ready for it or not, AI is here to stay. If you haven’t started evolving, the time was yesterday—those who hesitate risk being left behind. 2️. Education and culture are everything: Workforce development and trust need to be driven from both the top-down and bottom-up. Leadership plays a critical role in fostering this shift. 3️. Collaboration accelerates success: Navigating AI adoption isn’t something you have to do alone. Trusted partners and shared use cases can be the difference between progress and frustration. 4. Foundations first: Messy, siloed data will undermine AI’s potential. Master the basics to unlock real value. 5. Manage AI like a venture capitalist: Don't get stuck trying to measure the ROI of an individual AI project. Understand that it is a core competency and view AI initiatives as a portfolio of projects. 6. Cyber-security: Use the acronym NEST as a reminder of what needs to be done to protect your firm (ping me if interested in what the components are)   AI isn’t just a trend—it’s a transformative force for manufacturing. I’m excited to see how organizations embrace this technology to drive efficiency, innovation, and growth. Want to chat further? Send me a message!
