We were very excited to have Catalina Valentino 🔥in our Demo Day last month! Here you can find some highlights from her talk! 🌐What Does a City Need to Be Smart? It starts with smart infrastructure—buildings, roads, and traffic systems designed for efficiency. In parts of Europe, for instance, many buildings are far from optimized, leading to significant energy waste. We must focus on innovation to reduce this and create sustainable cities. 📊The Role of Data in Smart Cities Catalina likened data to a doctor diagnosing a problem: accurate, high-quality data allows us to make informed decisions. For example, understanding energy consumption in buildings can reduce usage by up to 30% with smart technologies such as IoT sensors and more. However, she also warned that not all data is good data—accuracy and reliability are critical for meaningful progress. 🚀 What's Next? A Unique Approach to Financing Smart Cities Catalina shared an exciting initiative she is launching next year: a fund to support municipalities with financing for sustainable infrastructure and regeneration projects. This fund employs a blended finance approach, combining technologies like green bonds or carbon credits with equity investments or loans to create tailored local development solutions. Catalina Valentino (MSc) is a globally-leading tech entrepreneur & speaker, and the Group CEO of ELIXR.    As a part of its Planet2030 vision, ELIXR has developed 4 technology companies since 2022, each aligned with the UN SDGs across major verticals such as: Infrastructure planning, decarbonisation, energy and data & smart cities investment to created the world’s first retrofitted Smart Cities.   In 2024, they increased GDP by £500m and £1.5Bn GDV in the UK with one of their technologies, are decarbonising a large number of U.K. and US housing stock and are implementing their cleantech solutions too, currently working across the Middle East, UK and US and are creating large infrastructure and energy funds to move the needle with finance.    She is also a member of the WBAF Smart Cities Board, served as “Special Advisor” to the UK Business Council for Sustainable Development and is “Board Advisor” to Una Terra VC (€200M).    Catalina is also a published co-author, an investor into Waxelene (Series C) — and — upon completing her MSc, has recently begun her first PhD in sustainable engineering.    She has also been accoladed Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2022 & Global Top 100 Women in Tech 2023.   Catalina is also a globally recognised speaker for Forbes, United Nations, World Economic Forum and more.
