We have opened a Request for Proposals (RFP) to identify an artist or artist team for a two-year residency to support implementation of the Vision Zero Action Plan in the unincorporated County community of Florence-Firestone. The artist/artist team will collaborate with staff from Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and LA County Public Works to develop and implement a) arts-based, healing-informed community engagement around strategies for safer streets and b) community-engaged temporary and/or permanent artworks as site interventions to enhance pedestrian safety, visibility, cultural equity, beautification, and spatial justice. Adopted in 2020 by the LA County Board of Supervisors, the Vision Zero Los Angeles County: A Plan for Safer Roadways guides efforts on reducing traffic deaths and severe injuries on unincorporated County roadways. The Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Los Angeles (DCA) sees to enter into a non-exclusive, project-based agreement with a qualified event producer (“Curator”) to conceptualize, curate, and deliver three (3) family-friendly events for the Fall and Winter programming of the Taxco Theatre in Canoga Park. The Program The Taxco Theatre, DCA/PERF, has produced Fall/Winter programming that celebrates the unique voices, cultures, and communities of Canoga Park and the West Valley since 2021. These events included a Day of the Dead procession for the Mainstreet Canoga Park Day of the Dead Festival, a performance and procession called Walking in Our Light, and this year, Spirits Rising, a shared altar of remembrance. These three events occur in Canoga Park from October to December 2024. Each event requires a variety of music, dance, theatre performances, food, and artmaking activities. ARTIST RESIDENCIES: The Neighborhood Engagement Artist Residency (NEAR) Grant Program, supports freelance teaching artists, social-activation artists, and social practice artists in providing community-based, participatory projects in self-selected non-arts venues within the City of Los Angeles. The Creative Optimism – Uplifting Promises (CO-UP) Grant Program supports collaborations between any nonprofit social justice organization and a creative teaching artist (a freelance artist or an artist already working within a non-profit arts organization in the same community as the social justice organization). Amount: NEAR $12,000, CO-UP $15,000 INDIVIDUAL ARTIST GRANT: City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Master Artist Project (IMAP) Grant Program The COLA IMAP Grant Program allows mid-career artists to create a new solo work with the freedom to re-focus on themselves and their core impulses. Call for artists. DCA will commission ten emerging artists to create dance-on-film video works influenced or inspired by the 1950s and 1960s thriller films of William Castle, as part of a larger program, LankerSCREAM Spooky Show, to be presented at the Lankershim Art Center in North Hollywood in October 2024. William Castle directed over 50 movies throughout his career and delighted in scaring audiences. He is best known for creating low-budget thrillers that he effectively promoted using gimmicks. DCA will award $2,500 to the commissioned artists, selected by peer panel review. The commission facilitates production costs including any of the following: choreography, artist fees, costuming, videography, collaborators, permitting, music rights, and other expenses related to the video production. DCA is seeking extraordinary storytellers with deep concern for environmental justice: DCA's Performing Arts Division will commission two playwrights to develop, write, and present a short subject stage play reading on subjects of health, air quality, and open space for the newly-launched Leimert Park Cultural Hub Festival of New Works. The winners will receive a 30-minute research session with a representative from the Los Angeles City Planning’s Environmental Justice Policy Team, and will be required to write a new work or works, conduct a table read, re-writes and rehearsals, all culminating in a staged reading. Each professional playwright, selected by peer-panel-review, will receive a commission of $2000.00 to write the new work(s). A total of $1,500.00 ($750.00 for each winner), will be awarded for production costs towards two professionally staged readings. Works may include a one-person play, 2 to 3 ten-minute plays, or a one-act play (not to exceed thirty 30 minutes total running time in performance).
