Founded in 1913, City of Hope has grown into one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S. and one of the leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses. City of Hope research has been the basis for numerous breakthrough cancer medicines, as well as human synthetic insulin and monoclonal antibodies. With an independent, National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center at its core, City of Hope brings a uniquely integrated model to patients spanning cancer care, research and development, academics and training, and innovation initiatives.     Mike Minh Fernandez, a Ph.D. candidate and student in the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences at City of Hope, has been honored with the prestigious Hematology Inclusion Pathway Graduate Student Abstract Achievement Award by the American Society of Hematology. This award highlights ASH’s commitment to fostering a diverse new generation of leaders in hematology — a mission Mike embodies through his dedication and research. “I feel very honored to receive this award and be recognized by ASH for my work in hematology, especially as a Ph.D. candidate," shares Mike, research associate in the Lili Wang lab at City of Hope.   • City of Hope patient William “Ty” Cavanaugh, a 30-year veteran of the West Covina Police Department, has been promoted to lieutenant while bravely battling acute myeloid leukemia (AML). “I’m going to fight this thing, and with City of Hope’s help, I’m going to beat this cancer,” Ty said. With his badge shining and the exciting news that he will become a first-time grandfather in January, Ty is determined to put cancer behind bars once and for all. Ty’s story is a powerful reminder to find strength in life’s milestones and never give up.

  • Introducing City of Hope’s 2025 Rose Parade Float: “A Beautiful Day for Hope.” This stunning float will debut at the 136th Rose Parade on January 1, celebrating cancer and diabetes survivors alongside their doctors from City of Hope Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orange County and Phoenix. Standing 20 feet tall and adorned with over 50,000 flowers, the float features two peacocks with vibrant tail feathers framing the Spirit of Life fountain. Integral to our mission, words like Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Trailblazing and Inclusion are beautifully displayed on the feathers, reflecting the essence of City of Hope’s work. Thank you to our patients for sharing their story of hope and resilience, their care teams and the volunteers responsible for bringing our float to life.   • Please join us in congratulating Vickie Dao, medical assistant at City of Hope Seacliff, for being recognized as a 2024 MySoCal Hospital Hero by the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC). She was honored for going above and beyond to assist non-English speaking patients, ensuring effective communication with their team of cancer-focused experts. A tireless advocate for her patients and skilled translator for the Vietnamese community, Vickie has connected numerous patients to advanced cancer treatment at City of Hope. In her spare time, she volunteers to care for seniors in the Vietnamese community where her grandfather lives. Vickie, thank you for your compassion, empathy and commitment to our patients. You are an inspiration to us all.

Her journey began when her daughter inspired her to join as a volunteer, and she found her calling in the Blood Donor Center, providing comfort and support to donors and patients alike. "I'm blessed and I'm blessing others," she says, earning her the nickname "Ms. Blessed." Nancy’s compassion shines through every interaction. She celebrates victories, offers solace in moments of loss and reminds us that giving blood is a simple yet profound gift.
