This #ThankfulThursday we are grateful for the support of R.J. & Liz Shook and SHOOK Research R.J. and Liz have been influential in driving support for groundbreaking childhood cancer research through their partnership with Children's Cancer Research Fund. At the annual Forbes SHOOK Top Advisors Summit, SHOOK Research is raising awareness of the need for lifesaving childhood cancer treatments. As a result, they have raised nearly $4 million to develop potentially lifesaving treatments for children with rare and aggressive cancers, supporting clinical trials at the University of Minnesota, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Earlier this month at Dream, CCRF's annual gala, we presented R.J. with the Dream Maker Award, an exclusive award presented to those who have shown truly exceptional support as we select and fund innovative research to deliver breakthrough treatments to children. Tonight, over 400 business and community leaders will gather at Dream, Children’s Cancer Research Fund’s signature gala. Dream will fund the brightest minds who are pursuing better, safer treatments for rare and hard-to-treat childhood cancers. At Dream, our audience will meet Megan, an incredible 13-year-old who has spent over half her life battling osteosarcoma. In sharing her story, Megan is leaving her comfort zone to advocate for kids like her. She doesn’t want other kids to lose years of their childhood to hospital stays and surgeries. She wants to ensure that the kids who are diagnosed after her have safe treatment options available, and a long, bright future ahead. “For research, you’ve got to have money. For money, you have to have people willing to give you money and people just need to give from their hearts,” Megan said. You can support this lifesaving work at Dream.ChildrensCancer.org.

Over half of all funding for childhood cancer research is from philanthropic organizations like Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Dr. Beau Webber, an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Minnesota, knows that the future for kids fighting cancer can only get brighter with supporters like you. “Support from the Children's Cancer Research Fund is very important…to bridge the divide between the lab bench and the clinic, and I think that's one of the biggest challenges that we face.” Dr. Webber’s laboratory focuses on synergizing genome engineering, stem cell biology and adoptive cellular therapy to develop new treatments for childhood cancer.
