My process for building apps: 1. Just start making. Get something on the screen. 2. But then go back and start over. When I get an idea, I have to get it on screen or paper first. Sometimes I use my planner, or my notes app, or my whiteboard. Then I start chatting with Claude about it. "I'd like to make an app for...." I let it cook for a bit. At this stage I don't worry about what it looks like, or the growth loop, I just get something down. I'm either be excited by the idea or it's "meh..." I have ideas daily, they're a dime-a-dozen. But it takes a lot of effort to get a good idea across the finish line, so I only pick the ones I'm pumped about. Once I have an idea I like, I re-start the development process. At this point I make a technical Product Requirements Document (PRD). I work by myself, but this document is really important for onboarding whatever AI assistants I work with and keeping both of us on track. A good PRD answers a few questions: 1. Business goals - Roughly, how many users are we aiming for? How will it make money? 2. User goals - What problem is this solving for the user? 3. Non-goals - What are you not working on? What will not be features? 4. Systems - What systems will it run on? (eg. iOS, Android, webapp...) 5. Narrative - (This is important for you and AI) What is the story of the problem your user is facing and how is it solved? I often ask ChatGPT for a PRD because it has memory across chats. This means that when I'm brainstorming, I might have an idea in one chat, or pick a feature out in another and tell ChatGPT to commit it to memory. (Claude can't do this) I save that PRD as a Notion document and I'll drop it into new chats when I start coding. You can also go pro, right from the beginning with Claire Vo's ChatPRD. It's EXCELLENT. They're far better than the ones I make in Claude or ChatGPT. Most of my apps right now are kindergarten level and the PRDs you get from ChatPRD are graduating from college so I don't always need the firepower. But if you have the vision, or are on a team, check ChatPRD out. Could be what you need! How do you like to start new projects?

Yesterday, I hosted the (probably) first no-code hackathon at Harvard Business School! We brought together ex-consultants, teachers, salespeople, and bankers as well as engineering, PM and design mentors to show that it’s possible to build a prototype with absolutely ZERO coding experience ... using AI tools. After a 15 minute learning session and 1 hour of heads-down time, we got some amazing demos including: Serif Kaya Cinar: End-to-end scheduling tools for hospital specialties Tijs Vangrunderbeek: AI Podcast curator and creator Matthew Jones: Airbnb for luggage storage Kyle Weil: Isolating food allergies using the USDA API Dion Boyd said “It feels almost criminal that someone with no coding experience whatsoever like myself could create a legitimate MVP within an hour” 😂 Thank you Pear VC for providing fuel, and Vercel v0, Cursor, OpenAI for Education, Anthropic, and ChatPRD for the innovative tools that made this possible. Thank you to my SWE friends Guy Berger, Feroze Mohideen, Robbert Struyven, Krishna Suraj, Natalie DellaMaria, Vineet Jammalamadaka for mentoring!

If you're in tech, you probably make a good salary. So now is not the time to be cheap. Give yourself a $100/month AI tools budget and enjoy the ride. We live amongst a smorgasbord of new AI tools and services, and most of them you can license for less than $20/month with no commitment for more. Some of them are musts for life (ChatGPT, with its INSANELY GOOD voice assistant but miserable-at-iteration images, and Perplexity, which over-delivers so hard on the way to dusting Google) Some of them might make your job WAY easier (Claire Vo's ChatPRD, GitHub CoPilot), Some of them are not ready for prime time (Gamma's AI powered but ugly slide decks, Suno for using prompts to make amusingly boring music) Some of them are dumb fun for a few hours. (Can of Soup, my favorite, and Google's Notebook LLM) What's the best AI tool under $20 bucks a month and why do I need to add it to my smorgasbord?

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗜 𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬 I’m getting hands on for GenAI experience through an idea I’m pursuing. As a result, while I’m keeping the idea itself quiet for now, I thought it would be fun to share my GenAI adventures! ‘How I used GenAI Today’ (actually yesterday!) is for 𝙵̲𝚎̲𝚎̲𝚍̲𝚋̲𝚊̲𝚌̲𝚔̲ and 𝙻̲𝚘̲𝚐̲𝚘̲ generation. This post is for the 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 use case. There is a separate post for the Logo use case. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗜 𝗱𝗼? I used ChatPRD by Claire Vo for feedback for the idea. I asked it: • If there was a market for my idea and why or why not • Who the competitors are • Monetization options • The best way to reach my potential customers for discovery • The questions I should ask in discovery • What I should name the app (I decided on a name from the suggestions!) 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁? I’m on the free version, which gives you three active chats. There are levels between $3.25 and $13 per month if you pay annually (and between $5 to $20 per month if you pay monthly). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻? / 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁? • 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦: It was incredibly fast to understand and consider the different categories of competitors (and who they are of course). • 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: Although I had prepared questions before using the tool [thank you midnight thinking! :) ], I would still be highly remiss to not use the tool. This is because it provided very good questions to ask and better ways to ask. In some cases it included questions that don’t apply, but I’m the human in the loop so I get to remove those before asking other humans! • 𝘜𝘴𝘦 ChatPRD: These are only a couple of examples of the useful information it provided (Note: I’ve used it before and found it incredibly helpful), so I’ll say using ChatPRD is a must for Product Managers! How have you used GenAI today? Please comment or DM if you’d like to share or chat!
