About us
Chapin Hall has, since its inception in 1985 as a research and policy center, focused on a mission of improving the well-being of children and youth, families, and their communities. We do this through policy research—by developing and testing new ideas, generating and analyzing information, and examining policies, programs, and practices across a wide range of service systems and organizations. Chapin Hall takes a broad perspective, embracing an interest in policies that promote the well-being of all children and youth while devoting special attention to those facing significant problems.

These past five years, Policy Fellow Shaun Lane has been a steadfast leader. His calm presence, subject-matter expertise, and nurturing style have been essential to his considerable success at Chapin Hall. Under his leadership, we have sustained and grown our partnership with Kinnect in Ohio — beginning with kinship navigation model design and implementation with OhioKAN, expanding to a navigation model for youth transitioning to adulthood, and now stepping into legal representation for kin caregivers. Shaun has been a highly sought-after national expert, a model organization citizen, and valued member of the Promotions Committee. He is thoughtful, willing to talk colleagues through challenges, and we especially admire how he invites different points of view. Happy anniversary, Shaun, and thank you! Every month, Chapin Hall sends out a short bulletin to thousands of practitioners, policy makers, and scholars about our latest evidence and tools for the field. ChapInsights, typically fewer than 500 words, is rich in content, and comes out the second Tuesday of the month. Sign up! https://lnkd.in/gSHYvkH6 “We are all about elevating evidence,” says Marrianne McMullen, our Director of Communication and Dissemination. “But we know that evidence has to be shared in a way that’s succinct and usable. Our goal is to reach out to busy people in the field with information that they can access in just a few minutes.”

Chicago has an invisible problem. It's called youth homelessness, and it disproportionately impacts LGBTQ+ youth. “These young people, they’re homeless not because of some bad behavior on their part. It’s not their fault that they’re homeless. It’s largely a lot of systemic factors, so we should really be doing all we can to help them find housing and stay housed,” Chapin Hall's Dr. Amy Dworsky shared with Mike Lowe on WGN-TV. These past five years, Senior Visual Information Specialist Jasmine Jackson has single-handedly raised Chapin Hall's profile by dramatically improving the design of our materials and making our data visualizations, charts, and graphs so much more understandable and accessible to a broader audience. She has also introduced the use of video at our organization, which enhances our internal meetings and gives external audiences a user-friendly way to get summaries of reports and tools. Jasmine is funny, super creative, and we deeply appreciate how she finds innovative design solutions for our teams. Happy anniversary, Jasmine, and thank you! Want to know more about Jasmine? Check out the story behind how Chapin Hall's Equity First Summer Associates Program got started. 👇 The application window for our 2025 cohort is open! Please apply and share with your networks.
For decades, Chapin Hall has documented persistent racial inequities in child and family well-being and provided evidence to inform solutions. But research is not just about the evidence we gather—it’s about who conducts the research. The questions we ask, the data we collect, and the perspectives we bring to interpreting results are all profoundly shaped by the experiences of the researchers themselves. That’s why we launched the Equity First Summer Associates Program in 2024. This career-building opportunity for PhD students in the Chicago area is designed to expand the pool of researchers informed by lived experiences of racial inequities. Participants learn to apply racial equity principles in real-world settings and develop personal action plans to drive equity and social justice through their work. 2024 participant Karla Thomas was grateful for the opportunity to see what it means to be in the field and to learn about real examples during her experience at Chapin Hall: “I've heard from every employee who's presented for us, who's spoken to us or we've had the opportunity to interact with—everywhere from the top down—they have much of the same messaging, understanding the long-term goals and really seem to have a long-term plan behind this that is many years deep and that doesn't expect change in an instant.” We’re proud to continue this important work driven by our Racial Equity Principles that serve as our guiding star. Applications for the 2025 Equity First Summer Associates Program are now open, with a deadline of February 14, 2025. The hybrid program runs from June 6 to July 22, 2025, offering participants hands-on experience in applied research and policy, along with a $10,000 stipend. See link for full details. If you or someone you know meets the criteria, I encourage you to explore this opportunity. Together, we can ensure that the future of research reflects diverse perspectives and drives meaningful change. https://lnkd.in/e-FWew45 #EquityInResearch #SocialJustice #EquityFirst #ChildWelfare
