Happy to see our conclusions posted in La Tribune: https://lnkd.in/dQijNcQq In short, we believe that insurance companies will act as the proverbial canari in the coal mine vs climate change: they are the first in line to lose money due to the increased frequency of extreme weather events, and they will raise their premium or stop offering insurance to everybody, including those who deny climate change. The days of low real-estate insurance premium are over. And given the size of the problem, it is doubtful that even governments can protect significantly all real-estate owners in risky regions subjected to tornadoes, floods, hail, sea-level rise, droughts, fires or extreme winds.

How many lawsuits does your AI provider face? In the general hype of AI, it was easy to miss that on Tuesday April 30, a group of eight US newspapers sued Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement. They alleged that OpenAI used their content without permission to train the GPT platform. The resulting alerts in our system would be relevant to those watching the #GenAI and #news sectors. https://lnkd.in/gGJ36EEf This is not the first nor the legal action citing copyright infringement, as the number of mentions of lawsuits against OpenAI in our licensed content is accelerating every quarter (see image). Looking at the most recent citations, we found this fascinating quote in a document by ACI Information Group as of May 10, 2024: “Facepalm: In a move that some have described as hypocritical to the point of being funny, OpenAI, the ChatGPT creator that is being sued by multiple entities for copyright infringement, has filed a complaint against a ChatGPT-focused subreddit for, you guessed it, copyright infringement. But the company appears to have backtracked.” In this new world of ubiquitous AI, the rights of the human authors must be preserved to enable new original content to be generated rather than parroted. How will Asian car manufacturers sell EVs in the US? Honda made a big announcement on April 25, 2024: a plan to invest US$11B in an ecosystem to produce EVs out of Allison, Ontario, Canada. The resulting alert in our system would be relevant to those watching the #car, #battery and #EVs sectors. The announcement is part of a near-shoring strategy of many car manufacturers to bypass the potential tariffs that the US government could impose on foreign EV cars to protect our own car industry. So far, Mexico had been the main beneficiary of such strategy, as highlighted by the February BYD announcement of the selection process of a site to build a factory. Our system detected a low-intensity alert on the Honda investment as early as January 7, 2024, from a document of Agence France Press, then a stronger alert on April 22 from the same source as officials in the Canadian government boasted about the coming announcement, and finally of course on April 25 after the official Honda announcement. https://lnkd.in/gxUYeyS2 Honda is placing a significant bet on the future of EVs, as this plant and its ecosystem will not ramp up production before 2028. But this bet stands in stark contrast with the current hesitations of the US car manufacturers towards EVs. Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars are at stake in the coming years, and investors need to monitor this situation carefully. What if phone manufacturers built EVs? The Chinese company Xiaomi is the third largest cell phone manufacturer in the world, behind Apple and Samsung. Like Apple, they announced plans to manufacture EVs. But while Apple has officially abandoned that project, Xiaomi has launched the SU7, a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3. On April 3rd, as they were delivering the first batch of cars to their customers, Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, announced that they had passed the threshold of 100,000 orders. In 2023, the Chinese EV market was three times the size of the US EV market, encouraging new entrants such as Xiaomi. In last week’s alert, we wrote: “China will be the first car market in the world where cheaper EV vehicles will displace the traditional ICE vehicles, giving the Chinese EV car manufacturers a powerful window of opportunity to amortize their investments, and prepare a worldwide price war on EVs.” Even more true now! https://lnkd.in/dZmPF--8 Causality Link has brought together causal, neuro-symbolic and generative AI to detect market-moving trends – right as they emerge. How will legacy car manufacturers compete against BYD? In our latest Alert Insight post, we share a set of alerts our system generated last week that would be relevant to anyone watching the #automotive/#EV, #battery and #energy sectors. BYD made several announcements during the week: the manufacture of its 7 millionth NEV (“new electric vehicle”, inclusive of EVs and hybrids) on Monday, the release of its 2023 annual report on Tuesday, and a declaration on Wednesday that EVs are entering the “knockout round” with internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles. It is difficult to fathom the size and momentum of BYD: their net profit in 2023 grew by 83% to $4.2B vs. 2022, while their revenue grew by 42% to $84B amid a fierce price war. By contrast, Tesla grew its 2023 automotive revenue by 19% to $78B with a net profit growth of 19% to $15B. Tesla is the leader in EVs in the US and BYD is the leader in China. However, the Chinese EV market is three times larger, growing faster and much more competitive. This is why the pronouncement by the CEO of BYD, Wang Chaunfu, on Wednesday, March 27th that EVs are entering the “knockout round” against ICE vehicles is so important: China will be the first car market in the world where cheaper EVs will displace traditional ICE vehicles, giving the Chinese EV car manufacturers a powerful window of opportunity to amortize their investments and prepare for a worldwide price war on EVs. How will human author rights be protected in the new world of AI-generated content? In our latest Alerts Insight post, we share an alert our system generated last week that would be relevant to anyone watching the #AI, #search and #IP sectors. This alert was on Google: on March 20 at 7:43 AM EDT, we learned from MT Newswires that Google accepted a €250M fine levied by l’Autorité de la Concurrence, the French competition regulator, for failing to properly compensate the authors of content used in its Gemini AI chatbot (originally known as Bard). This is one of the results of a fight by European agencies against US search and AI companies which are leveraging human content without proper recognition of the authors of that content. The March 13th deal between OpenAI and the French newspaper Le Monde that gave OpenAI access to the content of Le Monde is another proof point that the attitude of the AI giants towards the IP rights of journalists and authors is changing: https://lnkd.in/e5jFFHCc At Causality Link, we have always licensed the newspaper content we use for our commercial product, enabling our customers to trace back all our data to its original source for explainability and credibility, and paying the respect they deserve to the human authors of our texts. --- Causality Link has brought together causal, neurosymbolic and generative AI to detect market-moving trends – right as they emerge. What will the emergence of humanoid robots on factory floors mean for manufacturing – and for labor? In our latest Alert Insight post, we share an alert our system generated last week that would be relevant to anyone watching the #AI, #robotics and #automotive sectors. This alert was on Mercedes-Benz: on March 15 at 10am EDT, we learned from William Gavin of Quartz News Magazine that Mercedes-Benz was testing humanoid robots from Apptronik in one plant as it faced difficulties finding “reliable workers”. This is believed to be one of the first cases of a humanoid robot used on the factory floor. The introduction of humanoid robots into manufacturing processes is powered by rapid simultaneous progress in robotics and in AI. Some car manufacturers such as Hyundai, owner of Boston Dynamics, or Tesla, with its Optimus humanoid, are manufacturing these robots themselves. Others, such as BMW with Figure and Mercedes-Benz with Apptronik, will rely on third-party vendors to provide them with these robots. At a time where car manufacturing costs are under pressure, the introduction of cheap, “reliable workers” on the factory floor is a matter of survival for car companies. The recent UAW deal with Ford might prove to be a Pyrrhic victory for the Union. We previously posted about Ford and the UAW here: https://lnkd.in/eHAsA5-T Gavin’s article was updated on Friday.
