In a recent blog by Michael Townsley, we explored data on college closures reported by Inside Higher Ed in 2024, when 16 nonprofit colleges shut their doors. Using our Financial Risk Predictive Model, we analyzed data from 2017–2022 for nine of these institutions. Seven were flagged as high-risk for near-term failure while two were in the moderate-risk band—highlighting how quickly financial challenges can escalate. Our model provides a cost-effective solution for college presidents and boards to assess financial risk and develop strategies to prevent closures.
