What is your #carbonfootprint? Research shows that per year, the average american is responsible for approximately 16 tons of CO2-equivalent emissions per year. That is the same footprint as driving an average car about 36,000 miles. But what is the carbon footprint of a leaking oil or gas well? One of the worst offenders I saw was a well emitting around 100 MCF/day, or 100,000 cubic feet of natural gas. But why? You see, this well lost its gas pipeline connection years ago. Since the gas can't be sold, it is simply lost to the atmosphere. Since natural gas from this well is approximately 80% methane, in 1 year, this well will emit about 70 metric tons of methane into the air. Considering that methane is 84x as potent as CO2 on a 20-year timescale, 70 tons of methane equals.... A carbon footprint of over 5,700 tons of CO2e. In one year. 😮 Plugging this well and stopping 1 year of its emissions would do the same amount of climate action as over 350 people offsetting their carbon footprint in 2024. All we need now are partners and investors that want to support these climate actions by purchasing these high-quality #carbonoffsets. #methaneemissions #methanereduction #carboncredits
