Largest wholesale water supplier & second largest hydroelectric power producer in U.S., operating in 17 western states

About us

The Bureau of Reclamation (U.S. Department of the Interior) - Established in 1902, the Bureau of Reclamation is best known for the dams, powerplants and canals it constructed in the 17 western states. These water projects led to homesteading and promoted the economic development of the West. Reclamation has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and Grand Coulee on the Columbia River. Today, we are the largest wholesaler of water in the country. We bring water to more than 31 million people, and provide one out of five Western farmers (140,000) with irrigation water for 10 million acres of farmland that produce 60% of the nation's vegetables and 25% of its fruits and nuts. • As we bid farewell to Deputy Commissioner Grayford F. Payne upon his retirement, we celebrate his remarkable 38-year career in public service, particularly his profound impact on the Bureau of Reclamation. With nearly two decades in the Senior Executive Service, Gray has been a pivotal figure in managing vital water and energy resources in the American West. Joining Reclamation in 2010, he oversaw a nearly $5 billion budget, addressing critical challenges like drought and water scarcity. Since passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law he has been entrusted with oversight of additional funding in excess of $15 billion. His leadership has safeguarded essential water infrastructure for millions of Americans. Gray's diverse roles—from Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Indian Affairs to contributions at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission—showcase his commitment to excellence in finance and resource management. A proud graduate of George Mason University, his dedication to continuous learning is evident in his numerous accolades, including the Secretary of the Interior's SES Gold Leadership Award. As he steps into retirement, we honor his legacy and the path he has paved for future public servants. Thank you, Gray, for your unwavering dedication. Wishing you a retirement filled with new adventures!

  • The Hoover Dam sourced steel and steel products not just from Pennsylvania, but also from states like Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, and Tennessee. Plus, the powerful turbines and generators came from Wisconsin, California, and Colorado! It's a true testament to teamwork and collaboration across states to create this engineering marvel.

  • Snowpack is nature's reservoir and Reclamation’s water managers make countless calculations annually to use it effectively. ❄️ Snowpack collects water in the winter and releases it in the spring and early summer, filling Reclamation's reservoirs to help provide water supply for irrigation, fish & wildlife, hydropower, and recreation during the hot and dry summer months! Reliable snowpack is critical for water management and the success of farming and ecosystems alike. So, this season, Let It Snow!
