It was great for our Building Ventures team incl Allen Preger and Lucas Turner-Owens to be a small part of a great gathering at such a critical industry moment, thanks for making it happen BuiltWorlds Team! #ForABetterBuiltWorld
With a few weeks behind us, we wanted to share seven key takeaways from Venture East for those who were unable to make it: 1. Growth equity & private equity investors continue to crowd the M&A market earlier in the investment cycle of many tech startups, seeking opportunities with less competition. 2. Incorporating artificial intelligence is becoming a standard for new tech startups, putting those without it behind the curve. 3. Existing tech solutions need a plan for keeping up with the proliferation of new AI-powered solutions. 4. Government regulation (ie, sustainability, decarbonization, local ordinances, etc) continues to provide opportunities for innovation. 5. Corporate open innovation programs play a critical role in the growth and development of the global tech ecosystem. The biggest companies in said ecosystem invest significant resources in the identification, adoption, and investment in tech startups. 6. With the industry's growth in capital over the last decade, there are increasingly more growth stage companies looking to scale globally and thinking about exit opportunities on the horizon. 7. Strategic acquirers are always thinking about their offerings and, in certain circumstances, are willing to place big bets externally rather than develop products internally. A big thank you to Tyler Sewall, our senior director of research, for providing these takeaways! If you missed out on Venture East but don't want to fall out of the conversation completely, check out our upcoming Venture West conference, happening April 2025 in San Francisco: https://lnkd.in/gfEpceDF

In this article, Mayra Soto, Senior Associate at Building Ventures, examines the state of AI startups within the built environment and the factors shaping their success. Over the past decade, the sector has experienced significant growth, with startups increasingly focusing on AI to solve industry challenges. This trend aligns with broader technological advancements, including the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI, which have the potential to revolutionize construction and real estate. For AI solutions to be viable, they must address critical industry pain points, such as data security, project complexity, and thin margins. Startups should focus on solving tangible problems rather than simply automating processes. Additionally, responsibility and risk management are essential, particularly in construction’s highly regulated environment. Ultimately, successful AI startups must demonstrate genuine innovation and sustainable growth, contributing to a better-built world. https://bit.ly/3Z7fyXy

Thank you BuiltWorlds for the opportunity to help kickoff Venture East in our Building Ventures home town of Boston! Such a great event over two days catching up with the amazing community of built environment innovators that you have cultivated over the years.
What a way to kick off Venture East, starting our first day off strong with our Construction Tech and Venture Forums convening at Autodesk's Boston tech hub, one of the Autodesk Technology Centers, for a half day of content, networking, and a behind-the-scenes look at Autodesk Research and the many amazing projects currently being developed within. A huge thanks to Autodesk for opening its doors to us and our member and sharing with us insights from ongoing projects and lessons learned from projects since completed. Also, another big thinks to our speakers, Autodesk's Dr. Nathan King and Building Ventures Partner Allen Preger, and facilitators, Consigli Construction Co., Inc. Senior Construction Technology Director Jack Moran, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, Trimble Inc. Senior Director of Strategy and Corporate Development James Park, who provided invaluable content, led fruitful discussions, and set the tone for how we hope the rest of the event to play out. Looking forward to ending out day out at Suffolk Technologies, where we'll be hearing pitches from the company's latest BOOST accelerator program cohort. Hope to see you there!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel on #AI adoption in #contech for #SFTechWeek2024 hosted by Parspec. The conversation with Forest Flager, Jeevan Kalanithi, Sarah Buchner & René Morkos, Ph.D. was amazing. To kick off the discussion, I talked about the landscape of AI in #construction, including the rise in funding over the last few years, the growing percentage of startups relying on AI and ML, and the distinctions we use at Building Ventures to consider these companies in cohorts. I wrote up my remarks (and included all the data that I referenced) here: https://lnkd.in/g7eaU4kQ
