An independent library system offering millions of books and thousands of public programs to the people of Brooklyn.
About us
Established in 1896, Brooklyn Public Library is the nation’s sixth largest public library system and currently has nearly 700,000 active cardholders. The Library is among the city’s most democratic civic institutions, serving patrons in every neighborhood and from every walk of life. With 59 branch libraries, one within a half-mile of nearly all of Brooklyn’s 2.6 million residents, BPL is a recognized leader in cultural offerings, literacy, after-school services, workforce development programs and digital literacy. In a borough of wide economic disparity, where the costs of basic necessities often take priority over spending on cultural enrichment opportunities, BPL provides a space where patrons of all economic standings can access cultural and educational programs in a broad range of disciplines. The American Library Association’s 2014 Public Library Data Service Statistical Report ranked BPL third in the nation among public libraries for public programs offered and program attendance. In BPL’s collection includes 3.4 million print materials and more than 70,000 eBooks. Digital materials, including eBooks, eAudiobooks and eVideos are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Innovative new programs, including tablet lending, MyLibraryNYC and an online readers’ advisory service, have further increased the Library’s reach in Brooklyn’s communities. The Library’s governing body is the Board of Trustees, consisting of 38 members all serving in non-salaried positions. More than 2,000 volunteers give their time, talent and energy to support BPL’s programs and operations each year, contributing over 100,000 hours annually. The Library also greatly benefits from its 17 Friends Groups, which carry out important projects and engage in advocacy and fundraising initiatives. The Brooklyn Eagles, a new group of engaged young supporters, hosts fundraising events, participates in advocacy and helps increase awareness of BPL’s resources. Learn more at www.bklynlibrary.org.

We can't wait for everyone to see the stunning James Baldwin exhibition, Turkey Saved My Life: Baldwin in Istanbul. The exhibit officially opens December 12. Learn more about it from our curator below!
Contemporary art exhibition & program curator working in the public sector in support of visionary living artists.
I'm honored to have co-Curated the exhibition Turkey Saved My Life: Baldwin in Istanbul, 1961-1971 opening December 12th at Central Library. The show captures an exceptionally fertile period for the incomparable author, defined by his sojourn to a country that would allow him to gain critical distance from, and new perspectives on, America and its poisonous currents of racism and homophobia. Consisting of over 55 photographs by Turkish photographer Sedat Pakay, one of Baldwin’s close friends, the exhibition provides an intimate travelogue portrait of an understudied yet pivotal time in Baldwin’s life, wherein he wrote The Fire Next Time, Another Country and other vital texts. We open the show with a live reading of commissioned essays by two leading authors in Central Library’s Grand Lobby: Elif Batuman and Tavia Nyong'o. Then, we delve into the significance of Baldwin’s life abroad in Istanbul and his ongoing relevance to our culture and struggles for liberation through a panel discussion in the Dweck Auditorium with scholars and critics David Leeming, Robert F. Reid-Pharr , and Magdalena J. Zaborowska. You can register for the opening panel discussion here: https://lnkd.in/gFd6Hthq

A Heartfelt Thank You to Goldman Sachs for Empowering Black Women Recently, Brooklyn Public Library had the honor of hosting over 40 graduates from our LevelUP Career Advancement Program at Goldman Sachs headquarters for a transformative day of learning, networking, and growth. This inspiring event was made possible by Goldman Sachs’s One Million Black Women initiative, which continues to be a vital partner in advancing professional opportunities for Black women, particularly in industries such as real estate, finance, and technology. LevelUP is a workforce advancement program designed to help Black women pivot into and thrive in industries where they have been historically underrepresented. Thanks to the generous investment and unwavering support from Goldman Sachs, these women are activating new pathways to success, building wealth, and breaking through barriers. The event featured powerful insights from Goldman Sachs leaders, including Asahi Pompey, Sherry Wang, Jumi Barnes, and Aby Vanterpool, who led panel discussions and intimate table talks on navigating career growth, overcoming challenges, and pursuing leadership roles in emerging industries. These conversations underscored the importance of community, mentorship, and strategic investments in cultivating the next generation of leaders. We are deeply grateful to everyone at Goldman Sachs—especially Asahi, Jessica Taylor, Kristen Little, our Trustees Tim Ingrassia, Sandra Schubert, and Jerry Lee, and the many others who made this possible—for their steadfast and long-term commitment to empowering Black women leaders. A special thank you to the incredible graduates of the LevelUP program: your resilience, determination, and vision are truly inspiring. #OneMillionBlackWomen #OMBW
