Restore Default Settings? We are all familiar with the question when we have got ourselves into a bit of a digital tangle. Resetting back to a default position is a helpful way to undo some erroneous modifications we may have made to our computers or phones. But it is only ever a temporary position before we rebuild the device to suit our preferences. And how helpful is defaulting in a human context? We sometimes default to limiting beliefs, non-enabling behaviours or even allow the amygdala in our brains to be hijacked with default, and often unhelpful, emotions to external stimuli causing us to react in the moment. Corporates default to strategies that may have worked in the past but are not fit for their current or future problems, lacking the change or transformation mindset to create new solutions. As a coach, I am frequently on my guard to avoid defaulting to a tool or technique that I like without sufficient awareness or regard for the person that is in front of me. So with all this defaulting going on, what is the alternative? Awareness! Be aware of the behaviours that you have relied on but which no longer serve you well. Be aware of the limitations in your strategic options and actively seek new and innovative ways to solve your problems. Be aware of the judgments that you hold and challenge yourself on whether they are justified or fair. Only from a point of awareness can we make transformational changes with an open mind.
