Over the past few weeks, members of the Bloomingdale’s Executive Committee have been on a mission to meet with every colleague in our organization to share our bold new vision and the important role we all play in bringing our ambition to life. We believe our success lies in the collective efforts of everyone at Bloomingdale’s, and our Dream Big Tour has been an incredible way for us to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of where we’ve been and where we are going. We’ve already visited many of our stores across the Northeast and South, and look forward to visiting our remaining locations in the coming weeks! Thank you for having us Thomaï Serdari and NYU Stern Luxury & Retail MBA! It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with students and alumni and share insights into the ever-evolving retail industry.
How does the market look for a #business major today? And what is the role of an MBA in the #retail sector? Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure to engage in a fireside chat with Denise Magid, Chief Merchant Bloomingdale's and Keri Taub, Chief of Strategy, Bloomingdale's and explore the question of how to build a #meaningful #career in #retail. The event offered an excellent opportunity to reconnect with fellow #alumni, network, and gain insights into the ever-evolving retail industry. We had close to 100 participants, alumni, students and friends of the NYU Stern Luxury & Retail MBA. My three takeaways from this chat were: 1. Develop your #curiosity. You can get all the hard skills in business school, go through the motions of recruiting but you also need a unique and informed point of view to impress a hiring manager. 2. Start building your #network early and keep it warm through meaningful interactions, exchanges of knowledge that helps both parties, and a genuine interest in people below, above, and across your current position. 3. A business degree, career coach, or recruiting process are as fruitful as your ability to think #creatively and explore new avenues, be it in new roles, new areas of the industry, or different areas of an organization that may present a great departure from your original targets. Bloomingdale's is in good shape, has grown since pre-COVID-19, and there’s a vigor to its selling floors that competitors lack, yet Olivier Bron sees plenty of room for improvement. “The next chapter will be different from the past. We want to be bold and big,” said Bron, Bloomingdale’s chief executive officer. “I’m absolutely convinced that we have a fantastic platform to build the next chapter right now, because this company has been very well managed and because the foundations are very strong.” But there are concerns. Bloomingdale's’s chief merchant Denise Magid said the 150-year-old department store “has only just begun to tap into our full potential.” “I take immense pride in the evolution we’ve undergone in recent years,” Magid said. “We’ve enhanced our assortments, fortified our point of view and curation, and elevated both our digital and physical experience. Shoes have been pivotal to our growth, embodying our distinctive market positioning from accessible to aspirational." Magid is one of several female leaders featured in FN's June 3 print issue as part of the “Women Who Rock” special section. On June 5, FN and Two Ten Footwear Foundation honored these women at a live event in New York City.
