Protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 is key to preserving marine biodiversity and tackling climate change. In the 2 years since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, 119 countries have aligned their national targets to safeguard biodiversity, but there is still more work to be done. Kelly Henning, MD, who leads our public health program, has been working in public health for more than 30 years.   At #BAHISummit2024, she tells us about the vital role Bloomberg American Health Initiative fellows play in improving lives across the country – and the many public health interventions keeping us safe that often go unnoticed.

Cities are remarkable places. They are storehouses of history. They are diverse and vibrant, with a buzz that inspires action. And they have challenges – issues that affect their citizens directly. That makes them ideal laboratories for innovation and adaptation. In Government Technology, City of Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin describes the city and civic teamwork that helped create Birmingham Talks, a program that helps parents develop their children’s language skills at an early age. The idea was modified from City of Providence, which received support through our Mayors' Challenge – a competition that rewards novel municipal ideas and encourages their replication.
