Union drops charges against Clemens after private settlement United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 152 has withdrawn labor charges against Clemens Food Group, following a private agreement between the two sides. The union filed a grievance in October, accusing Clemens of violating labor laws while negotiating a contract with workers following Clemens' purchase of a Lancaster pork processing plant earlier this year. Clemens eventually shuttered the plant, idling more than 190 workers. In the agreement, Clemens continued medical coverage and increased severance benefits for laid-off employees represented by the UFCW. The plant, formerly owned by Kunzler & Co., closed on Dec. 7 and is being marketed for sale at a price of $3.995 million. FERC approves permit for controversial hydroelectric project along Susquehanna River Despite stern opposition from local citizens, environmentalists and elected officials, federal regulators approved a controversial initial permit for a $2.3 billion hydroelectric project along the Susquehanna River in York County, The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted York Energy Storage LLC four years to study the feasibility of the pumped-storage energy facility, which would require creating a 580-acre reservoir above the river to generate up to 858 megawatts of power. Critics fear the project will destroy farmland, recreational areas and local ecosystems, while supporters frame it as key to supporting renewable energy. Pennsylvania Supreme Court rules against $2M tax refund for Alcatel-Lucent Pennsylvania dodged a fiscal bullet in the wake of a decision by the state's highest court. The case involved a $2 million refund request by French telecom company Alcatel-Lucent, based on a now-discarded tax rule. The Commonwealth Court originally ruled in favor of the refund, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided against it, citing potential costs to the state of about $358 million in all. The amount is based on companies making claims similar to Alcatel’s. Alcatel has appealed and is seeking another hearing in front of Commonwealth Court. Troubled Harrisburg apartment complex set to change hands A proposed settlement filed last month aims to resolve a running dispute between Harrisburg city officials and the owner of Governor's Square, a 222-unit apartment complex. Under the agreement, Maryland-based Uptown Partners LP would turn over control of the property to an independent receiver and convert its bankruptcy from Chapter 11 reorganization to a Chapter 7 liquidation. The move ends months of tension over the deteriorating condition of the property, numerous code violations, and disputes over how to sell the complex. The deal would let the city or a receiver continue trying to find a buyer while ensuring the property meets HUD standards for affordable housing. Studies show auto IRAs are making retirement savings easier. Is Pennsylvania next? State-backed retirement plans, particularly auto-IRA programs, are showing positive impacts on savings, with workers 20% more likely to contribute and saving 18% more on average if they live in states offering the programs, according to a study by payroll services company Gusto. Seventeen states have adopted such programs, which automatically enroll employees in state-run IRAs if their employers don't offer retirement benefits, though employees can opt-out. Despite years of debate, Pennsylvania has yet to enact a similar program. Supporters argue auto IRAs would help boost retirement savings and reduce reliance on state assistance, while critics worry it could penalize employers and compete with private plans Check out local news and biznewsPA’s subscription offering here: https://lnkd.in/enCGfhXE
