JUNK SHOT REPRESENTING FOR DISASTER RELIEF: This past weekend we had the opportunity to lend one of our trucks and our time to the cleanup efforts after an EF-3 tornado tore through Valley View TX a few weeks ago. Our church organizes a Helping Hands Volunteer program when disaster strikes and mobilizes members of our church to lend aid and help to clean up. When we heard they were doing this for Valley View, which is just an hour north of us, we jumped on the opportunity to volunteer our resources to help out. We teamed up with volunteer workers and machines to move big piles of vegetation off of resident's properties and take them to a local transfer station that also volunteered their time and business for the disposal. This is one of the applications I saw for our future when we signed on to take on this franchise, that our resources can be used to do good in our communities and assist in relief efforts such as this. We are so grateful to have been able to do this. The destruction was mighty. We saw a shed that had been taken completely apart with only its load bearing joists still in the ground and a tractor in the midst of them untouched. Multiple trees, wooden boards and warped metal all stacked along the sides of the road from previous weeks of work to clean up properties that had been affected. A school bus laying on its side. Homes with entire roofs gone or completely tarped over. Empty space on a lot where a home used to be. An entire mobile home neighborhood that had been completely ransacked by the wind and the destruction the families living there have to deal with, with great piles of debris sitting by the road in front of their homes, furniture and children’s toys mixed in with vegetation and twisted metal. So heartbreaking. But miraculous too. The shell station pictured here was a truck stop. When people learned the storm was coming they came to this truck stop to take shelter and wait out the storm. Nearly 150 people took shelter here. And then it took a direct hit and the people were trapped. Before rescue efforts could even get to them they were calling it a mass casualty event and they sent ambulance busses from various locations across DFW to handle the rescue and recovery efforts at this rest stop. A mass casualty event a few hours later was instead, a miracle, as they were able to get everyone out alive. I looked at this place as we drove by it a few times today and it is completely gutted. These people had angels watching over them that night. Just wow! We ended up moving three very tightly packed loads of vegetation to the transfer station. This was a special experience and one we would do again and again as long as we have the resources to do so. #junkshot #communityservice #betterthanwefoundit

  • so well said. the 5 by 5 and the 3:3:3 rule are great, but what struck home the hardest was about not punishing your body with what you eat and expecting it to be happy.
