New research finds an average of 22 adolescents 14 to 18 years of age died in the U.S. each week in 2022 from drug overdoses, raising the death rate for this group to 5.2 per 100,000-- driven by fentanyl in counterfeit pills. That's a classroom each week... There should be constant news coverage and action from our legislators. It shouldn't have to happen to you, for it to matter to you.

With the ISU Cyclones football team starting their 2024 season 3-0, I thought it might be an appropriate time to make this post. Before the season began, our non-profit organization had the honor and privilege of attending the ISU Kickoff Lunch as guests of HHS. We were able to mingle with some of the staff and engage in a question-and-answer period with Coach Campbell. Our foundation focuses a great deal on the daily struggles people face, especially our youth. One of our questions was how Coach Campbell and his staff manage the reactions of both the success and failures of his players. The Cyclones have had tremendous success in recent years with the new culture that has been created. Along with that comes expectations and pressure. While I was already a huge fan of Coach Campbell, his answer to our question solidified our support for him and his staff. He could not have provided a better response. There is a reason ISU leads the country in player retention, even with the introduction of NIL. Rest assured, if you have athletes attending ISU, they are in great hands, both on and off the field. I cannot say enough good things about this program. I am proud to be a Cyclone.

We had the privilege of attending and speaking at the DEA Summit last week. We learned a ton, made some great connections, and met some wonderful families/advocates.

We spent the afternoon with Andrew Allen, the President & CEO of YSS (Youth & Shelter Services). We got to tour the amazing new Cambridge Iowa facility they have opening in late 2024. YSS is one of Iowa's oldest and largest youth-serving nonprofit organizations. Their mission is to create hope and opportunity by putting kids first. They offer education to build healthy minds and bodies; counseling to overcome life’s challenges; and stability to focus on the future. This facility is going to be absolutely amazing!!! Ask yourself why this isn't all over the news. This is happening every single day. The problem extends far beyond those who are labeled as addicts. Time to wake up and demand action from your legislators. Everyone needs to educate themselves on this issue/crisis. I'm pretty certain none of these babies had a drug problem.
