About us

BACS breaks the mental health, housing, and community barriers that hold people back. We are helping people experiencing mental health needs or housing crises, while balancing other complications like health needs, substance use, generational trauma, incarceration, poverty, and more. BACS does “whatever it takes” to create programs that meet community needs, integrating nearly seven decades of behavioral health expertise with our Housing First philosophy.

Thank you to Tipping Point for inviting its fellow non-profits (Terrell, newly promoted VP of Real Estate and Property Management) and Philanthropists like Jackie Downing who single-handedly fundraised to open Anna’s House - the first beautiful home in Alameda County where mothers and their children get to live in peace, beauty, and tranquility while they receive employment and care support from Roots while they stabilize our families to find permanent housing. Go Jackie and Tipping Poiint!

  • Ride out the holiday season with joy and cheer. Our Amber House team got together for a holly jolly party filled with love and laughter – celebrating the hard work of our team, and the hundreds of successful journeys of people who visited the program this year. At BACS, we're all about providing a safety net of compassion and support for individuals in crisis. Our crisis residential programs, like Amber House, are comfortable and secure spaces with around-the-clock care and supervision. We help people bounce back from psychiatric distress with practical and therapeutic support. Our programs offer a range of services, including respite, therapy, family support, crisis management, and wellness planning. Thanks to our dedicated staff for their tireless efforts to support our community's mental health. Here's to a holiday season filled with hope, happiness, and healing! #BACS #AmberHouse #HolidayVibes #MentalHealthMatters #WhateveritTakes

  • So BACS started in 1953 in Oakland. With the same mission we carry today. We do whatever it takes. We’ve added to break down the government bureaucracy so more dollars gets to the streets. We serve the members of our community that many times get refused service because of how acute they are. And so when BACS acquired Thunder Road through our lovely partners at Sutter Health, this became home and has served over tens of thousands of people in almost ten years. And while we were making some minor updates. We said - let’s go big and let’s represent who we represent. This mural. The beautiful muralist and her colleagues. You captured the spirit that this article repeats. We take hopelessness. And we turn to hope. We take losslessness and we turn it in to being filled up with happiness. We hold the hand of our participants by doing whatever it takes. As the CEO, I have more lived expertise than I care to think about it. Even in my role I had to administer a fentanyl shot this year. And at 14 years in. I could and would never stay away from the programs and the beautiful people we serve. and this mural. Hands down names who BACS is. Was. And will always be. 71 years strong. We are one of Oakland’s strongest. Our sister agencies and the non profit ecosystem. This is where our City should be focusing in on and asking for advice about. Because you have hundreds of non profits that want to help this beautiful City. And this mural was painted for this moment in time. Xoxo Jamie Almanza CEO

We're honored to showcase Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith's powerful mural in Temescal. This stunning piece celebrates the resilience and strength of our community's most vulnerable members.
