Elementary students at BASIS Independent Manhattan recently took part in a unique annual competition modeled after the popular TV show "Shark Tank." Combining English, engineering, and drama, teachers guided students through the design process, created a working prototype of their inventions, and then crafted their own business pitches to present to the judges. Top inventions included a pencil case with games and music, a watch that glows and vibrates when the wearer has forgotten something, and a GPS tracker that can work anywhere in the world. Construction at BASIS Independent Bothell has finally began on the north parking lot where the future competition field and hardscape play area will be built. We recognize the significance of nurturing well-rounded students with diverse interests, including but not limited to interscholastic and sports activities. These facilities will provide students with a dedicated space not only for Physical Education, but also for student-athletes to refine their skills, foster healthy competition, and develop leadership qualities, both on and off the court. One of the most unique and fun parts of teaching at BASIS Independent Schools is the opportunity to create interdisciplinary projects and collaborate with other teachers. BASIS Independent Bellevue teachers created a Pre-Algebra Market Day, combining math, entrepreneurship, economics and salesmanship where students applied what they have learned including applying for a loan, sourcing items, calculating mark-up, discount, and sales tax. Teachers brought their classes to the market, where each student was given an “allowance” that they could use to purchase products created by their peers. Ranging from drawings to crocheted octopi to 3-D printed crafts and more, the merchandise really showcased our students’ creativity.
