North Scottsdale resident Jerre Stead never expected to eat regularly again after experiencing complications from a hiatal hernia repair, and then an emergency that led to feeding tubes. But in this story from FOX 10, we hear about how Stead sought a second opinion that led to him to connecting with Dr. Jennifer Preston, who, after several tests, told Stead she could do the surgery to remove those tubes and correct his previously unsuccessful hiatal hernia surgery using the da Vinci 5 dual console robot, which significantly helped Stead’s road to recovery. The surgery happened in September, and was a success. Stead had one of his last follow-up visits with Dr. Preston a few weeks before Christmas, and was officially cleared to eat and enjoy regular holiday meals with his family. ABC 15 recently aired a story highlighting the burden on caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s, the fastest-growing disease in Arizona and now the seventh-leading cause of death. In the segment, Lori Nisson, Family and Community Services director for Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Banner Sun Health Research Institute, warned the state lacked enough dementia specialists to meet the growing demand. She shared how new treatments, early detection and support groups are sources of hope. The story also included a focus on a Banner Alzheimer’s patient whose early-onset diagnosis in his 50s shifted the dynamics of his relationship with his partner and caregiver.
