We’re a capital project management consultancy dedicated to leading nonprofits and institutions through the successful design and construction of arts and cultural spaces. Ballington is a NYC certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE). Since our launch in 2015, we’ve served as owner’s representative for numerous museums, theaters, learning spaces, and community gathering places. We routinely manage public-private partnerships, including with several prominent performance and arts institutions, such as The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Africa Center, MoCADA, The Shed, and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Our founder Joseph Auld saw the value of a project management model reimagined for the arts—one responsive to the specific needs of small businesses and creative organizations. Community-oriented, with aspirational missions, our clients require a partner capable of guiding their team through planning, design, and construction. To be successful, we must align the different perspectives of project stakeholders under a shared vision. Prior to founding Ballington, Joe served in key executive positions at top NYC design/construction consultancies and as Associate VP of Design and Construction at Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-GNY), the largest affiliate of one of the nation’s first developers of affordable housing. During his twelve-year tenure at VOA-GNY, Joe refined his approach for steering organizational goals into project realities. Hands-on and empathetic, he focused on the pressing needs of the communities served by VOA-GNY initiatives while he united builders, designers, and owners in purpose. Specifically, the capacity of architecture to inspire and strengthen a community. For these and for many other reasons, we’ve named our practice after a founder of VOA, Ballington Booth, who in 1896 dedicated his organization to “reaching and uplifting” the American people by “go[ing] wherever we are needed and do[ing] whatever comes to hand” (VOA website).
