Autonomous farming begins with collaborative Burro robots

About us

Our mission is to solve the crushing labor problem faced by farmers today, by making collaborative robots a reality. To do this, we are starting first with Burro. Burro is a robotic platform that follows people and can autonomously run cargo around, relieving people of strenuous tasks which add little value, so that they can focus on more valuable work.

    SVP of Revenue | Burro

I’ve been in robotics for a while now. Not since day-1, but pretty early days of mobile autonomous robotics. I listened to an #agtech founder today say, he "gets upset" when he hears his colleagues talk about having 100 robots deployed or 400 robots deployed. His point being that hundreds of robots is a negligible percentage of the market. A better strategy, in his mind, is to partner with large farm equipment OEMs, so you can scale quickly when your product is ready for commercialization. He also said this is a more sound investment proposition, because they don’t spend on equipment production. Probably true in a perfect world. The challenge is that startups on this path could be looking at multi-decades of trials in non-production settings before they ever have enough operating hours to be real. Only to find that many of those learnings weren't very valuable, because trials aren't the same as production. Maybe it's more scalable. But time to market matters. A great real-time example that most of us know is Cruise and Waymo. Cruise has been majority owned by GM since 2016. Waymo doesn’t have exclusive OEM partnerships. They’ve used Jaguar, Lexus, Chrysler, and others. Priorities 1, 2, 3… have always been real world learning. Operating hours, miles driven, exceptions handled, iteration. In 2023, Cruise traveled 2.6M miles. Waymo traveled 4.8M miles. In 2024, Cruise is winding down the robotaxi business. Waymo’s expanding to new cities, and going international. Burro, recently referred to as "truly the Swiss Army knife of agriculture", is going to deploy our 500th Burro in the next few months. And we’ll end this year at over 500,000 hours of autonomous operation in production. Burros drove the equivalent of over 2 laps around the 🌎 this year. You can say, "...it's so small, it doesn't make any impact whatsoever." The learnings from that real-world experience are INVALUABLE! Most companies keep data like this private. I'd bet you could count on 1 hand the number of agtech startups with that much production operation. Operating in the real world matters. Making a difference today, as opposed to YEARS from now, matters. Our customers have pressing needs now. And they need real solutions now.

Nice to see these kinds of startup-to-startup collaborations in ag robotics - a space that's set to grow massively in importance over the near term 🦾🤖🔽 Fieldwork Robotics 🇬🇧 and Burro 🇺🇸 have partnered to develop a version of the former's raspberry-picking robot that can be mounted on the latter's autonomous base unit. Why is this important? On top of the not-insignificant initial costs of adopting any single robotics solution, farmers are also faced with a plethora of different options fulfilling different use cases, most of them lacking interoperability - meaning that costs continue to mount. Interoperability enables more efficient and cost-effective automation for farmers. Fieldwork's Fieldworker 1, running on Burro’s base, has completed field trials at Driscoll's berry grower PLACE UK Ltd and will be involved in further trials with Australia's Costa Food Group, another berry grower, next year. "A collaboration with an excellent partner like Burro serves to significantly strengthen our first-mover advantage," David Fulton, Fieldwork Robotics CEO, said in a statement. "Our combined expertise in robotics and automation facilitated an interactive and highly effective partnership," added Burro CEO Charlie Andersen. "We’re excited to see where our partnership takes us next, and our customers are hugely excited about their solution to autonomous harvesting." The partnership has also developed compatibility for Fieldworker 1 with bases from third-party companies too, such as OxDrive. #agtech #agritech #agrifood #agrifoodtech #cleantech #climatetech #robotics #automation #farmtech Image: Fieldworker 1 mounted on Burro.
