Updates

  • 💡 Innovative Landfill Engineering 💡 ACUA is nearing completion of the third phase of our innovative landfill MSE Berm project—the first in New Jersey to utilize recycled asphalt pavement and geogrids. This design not only expands solid waste storage capacity but also reinforces environmental protection with dual liners, leachate capture systems, and a litter fence to keep our community clean. 🌎 Hear from ACUA Chief Engineer Tom Ganard as he explains the importance and impact of this project!

  • As we close out 2024, we want to take a moment to send a BIG THANK-YOU to all of our team members at ACUA. Each day—whether in the rain, snow, heat, or cold—our employees show up and serve Atlantic County. From early mornings to night shifts, your hard work ensures essential environmental services run smoothly. Thank you for your commitment and all you have accomplished this year!

Atlantic County in New Jersey attracts a lot of tourists. Millions of people per year.  It’s well known for its casinos, boardwalk, and beautiful beaches.  But some fly in for a different reason: to see what happens to all of the waste. Visiting from South Korea, Kenya, China, and countries around the world, people who care about waste management come to learn from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA). ACUA handles all of the solid waste, wastewater, and recycling for the county, and has been a pioneer in the industry for decades. They’re passionate about preserving the place they love, and they love being a guinea pig for new tech. Case in point: They have the only commercial onshore wind farm in New Jersey. Wind and solar, along with their battery storage system, powers the entire wastewater treatment facility (see photo below). Then there’s all of the EVs. In addition to electrifying their fleet, they’ve been offering EV charging both for employees and for the public for over a decade–FOR FREE.  Several employees have purchased EVs as a result of the perk. But they don’t stop there. They’re educating the entire community on EVs, holding workshops and test drive events, including their annual Earth Day festival. So what’s next for these forward-thinkers? A lot. The experimentation never ends. In collaboration with startup PolyGone, ACUA is piloting a system designed to remove microplastics from wastewater before it's released into the ocean. They’re developing a renewable natural gas facility that will convert landfill gas into natural gas, supplying power to local homes and businesses. And they’re pursuing the holy grail of waste management: Waste conversion technology. They’re committed to removing as much usable “waste” from waste.  Thank Matthew DeNafo and the entire ACUA team for your leadership and generous spirit. You’re inspiring! We’re proud to call you a partner of The EMPOWER Project, and hope to one day take a tour ourselves!

🌟 Art with Purpose: Supporting Homeless Women in Atlantic City 🌟 The Atlantic County Utilities Authority recently hosted their annual Recycled Art Contest for America Recycles Day. This year, Adelaide's Place in Atlantic City submitted some incredible entries. For those unfamiliar, Adelaide's Place is a life-changing organization that supports homeless women, offering resources to improve their quality of life and escape the dangers, trauma, and distress they face daily. Their mission is inspiring, and the work they do is essential. Eduardo Jiménez and his amazing wife, who volunteer at Adelaide's Place, helped some of the women create stunning works of art using recycled materials. Their creativity and resilience truly shine through these pieces, and I couldn’t help but think, how can I take this a step further to support this cause? 💡 That’s where you come in. I’ve decided to auction off two of these beautiful artworks to raise funds for Adelaide's Place. All proceeds will go directly toward helping this vital organization continue its mission. Here’s How You Can Help: 1️⃣ Bid on the Art: DM me your bid for one (or both) of the pieces below. I’ll keep the community updated as bids come in. Bidding ends 12/20 @ 5PM. 2️⃣ Share this Post: Amplify the message to help generate more support. 3️⃣ Donate Directly: If art isn’t your thing but you still want to help, visit www.AdelaidesPlace.org or donate via Venmo: @Adelaides-Place. Let’s rally together to make a difference for the women who depend on Adelaide's Place. Thank you for your support! CURRENT BIDS (12/9): Sunburst - $100 Kachi Taino - $40
