🚨 The Top 10 Things You Should *Not* Do as a CEO in 2025 🚨 2025 is here, and with it, a fresh set of ways to accidentally sabotage your company’s future. As someone who’s seen their fair share of executive debt (and written a book about it!), let me save you the trouble. Here’s a handy guide to what *not* to do: 1️⃣ Assume your team understands your “big vision” because you said it ONCE on a Zoom call in 2021. Spoiler alert: They don’t. Repetition isn’t redundant—it’s leadership. 2️⃣ Let “hope” be your primary strategy for hitting Q4 numbers. Hope is a beautiful thing. It’s not, however, a business plan. 3️⃣ Think AI will solve everything, including your morning coffee order. AI is a tool, not a silver bullet. If your processes are broken, it’ll just automate your chaos faster. 4️⃣ Confuse “culture” with free snacks and T-shirts. People leave toxic environments, even if you bribe them with kombucha. 5️⃣ Ignore the churn rate because “we’ll fix it later.” Newsflash: “Later” doesn’t exist on a profit-and-loss statement. 6️⃣ Stick to the same GTM strategy from 2019 because “it worked before.” You know what else worked before? Blockbuster. 7️⃣ Think your investors won’t notice you’re winging it. They always notice. Always. 8️⃣ Let every department invent their own KPIs. To RTO or not RTO...that is the question for every executive leader in 2025. Decisions about employee work locations carry significant implications. As leaders, we must assess these choices through a comprehensive lens, considering both immediate outcomes and long-term impacts—a concept we refer to as "Executive Debt." Executive Debt refers to the cumulative consequences of leadership decisions that, while beneficial in the short term, may lead to substantial costs or challenges over time. In the context of work location policies, this encompasses the potential ramifications of enforcing strict in-office mandates without fully evaluating their broader effects. Recent studies indicate flexible work arrangements can enhance productivity, employee satisfaction, and retention. A 2024 study led by Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom found that employees working from home two days a week were as productive and promotable as their full-time office counterparts, with a notable 33% reduction in resignation rates among hybrid workers. Conversely, mandating a full return to the office may lead to decreased morale, increased turnover, and challenges in talent acquisition, as employees increasingly value flexibility in their work environments. A recent article in The Atlantic discussed that some executives advocate for a return to full-time office work, citing concerns about collaboration and innovation. However, the article noted that while hybrid work is becoming more common, debates continue about its long-term impact on productivity and company culture. To mitigate Executive Debt and cultivate a resilient, motivated workforce, consider the following: 🔸 Assess Organizational Needs: Evaluate which roles necessitate physical presence and which can thrive remotely or in a hybrid model. 🔸 Engage with Employees: Solicit feedback to understand preferences and concerns, ensuring that policies align with the workforce's needs and expectations. 🔸 Implement Gradual Changes: If a return to the office is deemed necessary, consider phased approaches that allow employees to adjust and provide input. 🔸 Monitor and Adapt: Continuously assess the impact of work location policies on productivity, engagement, and retention, remaining open to adjustments as needed.
