Join us Jan. 18 @ 2:00 p.m. for a 10th anniversary screening of SELMA at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. David Oyelowo gives a stirring performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in this powerful historical drama from Academy Award-nominated director Ava DuVernay. Avoiding the traditional approach to the Hollywood biopic, DuVernay’s film focuses on Dr. King’s struggle for equal voting rights, culminating in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march. Bradford Young’s sensitive, nuanced cinematography is one of the highlights of the film, a Best Picture nominee that won Original Song for “Glory,” by Common and John Legend. On the occasion of the 10thanniversary of the film’s wide release, this program will conclude with a post-screening conversation that will dive into the craft of the filmmakers, DuVernay’s approach to biographical filmmaking, and a detailed history of the film’s production. https://lnkd.in/ghBZ_Qjm

Did you know artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was an avid movie lover, often drawing inspiration from films while he painted? In this exclusive interview during ARRAY's "Hollywood Africans" film series, his sister Lisane Basquiat shared fascinating insights into how cinema influenced his creative process. Watch now to uncover a lesser-known side of the legendary artist and how the film SHAFT influenced his work. Inspired by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s painting, "Hollywood Africans in Front of the Chinese Theater with Footprints of Movie Stars," ARRAY’s “Hollywood Africans” film series was a monthly summer screening event that explored representation and storytelling in and beyond the Golden Age of Hollywood. Just as Basquiat’s art chronicled his influences and the times in which he lived, this film series, pulled from his private VHS collection, ignites conversation around cinema’s role in the portrayal of and commentary about African Americans and other cultures. https://lnkd.in/gTyzMSKv
