🛑 The Danger of Not Listening: How It Impacts Leadership 🛑 I recently read this article below highlighting how listening — arguably the most critical communication skill for leaders — is often overlooked in leadership training. 📉 What Issues Leaders Face When They Don’t Listen: 1. Perceived as Un-coachable as they are seen to be resistant to feedback. 2. Poor at Influencing because their ability to inspire is severely diminished. 3. Leaders who don't listen overlook key insights, leading to false conclusions and poor decisions. 💡 The Two Faces of Poor Listening: 1️⃣ Overly Passive: Leaders who are disengaged or shy seem uninterested, lack understanding, or even appear uncurious. 2️⃣ Over-Talking: Leaders who interrupt or dominate conversations are perceived as self-centered or dismissive, eroding their influence. 🎯 What is Listening From my experience effective listening boils down to two components: 1. Empathy: Truly connecting with others and making them feel understood. 2. Curiosity: A genuine desire to explore, learn, and understand what’s being shared. I liked the way the article summarized how to improved your listening skills. 💡 Four Techniques to Improve Your Listening: 1️⃣ Listen Until the End: Be fully present, resist interrupting, and let others finish their thoughts. 2️⃣ Listen to Summarize, Not Solve: Focus on understanding first by paraphrasing and confirming: “Did I get that right?” 3️⃣ Listen for Both Relationship and Content: Balance empathy with problem-solving to address both connection and action. 4️⃣ Listen for Values: This is the piece I loved the most in the article.
