About us
Established in 1985 and based in Washington, DC, the Arab American Institute (AAI) is a non-profit, nonpartisan national leadership organization. AAI was created to nurture and encourage the direct participation of Arab Americans in political and civic life in the United States. AAI represents the policy and community interests of Arab Americans throughout the United States and strives to promote Arab American participation in the U.S. electoral system. The Institute focuses on two areas: campaigns and elections and policy formation and research. AAI strives to serve as a central resource to government officials, the media, political leaders and community groups on a variety of public policy issues that concern Arab Americans and U.S.–Arab relations. As the only national organization that promotes Arab American participation in the U.S. electoral system, AAI has developed a host of services, from voter education to liaison with the national parties, to support the community’s activities. We are also the leading policy and research organization on domestic and policy concerns of Arab Americans. Through ongoing meetings with members of the Administration and Congress, a variety of publications and issue briefs, media and direct member mobilization, AAI maintains a strong presence among policy makers who impact our issues.

On Election Eve: Trump and Harris Voters Agree on Demanding a Ceasefire for Gaza and Lebanon and Restrictions on U.S. Arms to Israel - A majority of Harris voters (65%) and a plurality of Trump voters (45%) believe the United States should comply with U.S. laws and not provide unrestricted assistance to the Israeli government if it continues to put civilian lives at risk in Gaza and Lebanon. "Among a deeply divided electorate, Trump and Harris voters agree on a way forward when it comes to Israel and Palestine. In the last hours of this critical election, American voters have defined a policy framework that would save lives. They want to see a realignment of the U.S. approach to Israel and Palestine with the values of the American people. They want a ceasefire, and they want to see restrictions on U.S. military aid to Israel," said AAI President, James Zogby. https://lnkd.in/deDnRviU

#CrisisofHate The FBI released the 2023 hate crime statistics this morning showing last year was the highest year on record for total hate incidents for the third year in a row. 123 anti-Arab single-bias incidents were reported. This is the highest-ever number of anti-Arab incidents since the FBI began collecting data on the category in 2015 and a 34% increase since 2022. In reviewing the data AAI found that the most violent anti-Arab hate crime of 2023– the tragic murder of a six-year-old Arab American Muslim child of #Palestinian descent named Wadea al-Fayoume and the brutal attack on his mother –were not properly reported in federal statistics. From the review of the data at this time, it is also unclear whether the attack on three #ArabAmericancollege students—Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Tahseen Aliahmad—all of whom are of #Palestinian descent, was reported as a #hatecrime. Meanwhile, hate crimes targeting Jewish, Muslim, and LGBTQ+ communities also surged, with anti-Jewish incidents increasing by a staggering 63%, and anti-Muslim incidents rising 49% - the highest since the first year of the Trump Administration. We need (1) mandatory hate crime data collection & reporting (2) better response to reporting barriers including lack of trust of law enforcement and (3) elected officials to prioritize policy remedies to respond to this #crisisofhate not engage in rhetoric that can embolden it. Please join us in standing in solidarity with the Haitian immigrant community, condemning the hate, and offering our collective strength to help them through this trying time by signing the below statement of support to the Haitian community. “We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, are appalled by the malicious lies being propagated about the Haitian American community. We are deeply concerned by the hateful actions and speech being directed at them. This is not the first time an ethnic, racial, or religious group has been vilified due to harmful incitement coming from elected or formerly elected officials. Our own community has endured similar hatred, bigotry, and threats, and we understand the pain and fear that come with such attacks. We want our Haitian brothers and sisters to know that we stand with them during this especially difficult time. We offer our full support in confronting the hatred they are facing, and we are committed to ensuring their safety, dignity, and well-being. Together, we can build a more just and compassionate society for all.” Click to sign on: http://bit.ly/47zTUxK

Testifying at the Senate Judiciary now: https://lnkd.in/e47E6-X2 AAI Executive Director Maya Berry is testifying in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary at a full committee hearing A Threat to Justice Everywhere: Stemming the Tide of Hate Crimes in America. You can access the hearing, A Threat to Justice Everywhere, now. Today’s hearing comes at a time when our community has faced increased hate incidents here in the United States. We are also bearing the pain of witnessing the violence and genocide affecting our families in Palestine. That violence has come home as many of those in our community, and allies of Palestinian rights, have been subjected to violence and hatred because of their stand for justice.
