American start-up Last Energy has received a letter of interest from the Export-Import Bank of the United States, confirming the bank’s willingness to move forward with due diligence for $103.7 million in financing for the company’s project in Southern Wales. Last Energy announced plans in October to deploy four 20-megawatt microreactors at the site where the former coal-fired Llynfi Power Station operated from 1951 to 1977. The nuclear units would provide power for midsize industries and data center campuses, the company said. https://lnkd.in/eFdAgQMT

A “green” designation would imply state recognition that nuclear energy causes no harm to the natural environment. State legislation that designates nuclear power as “green energy” and expands oil/natural gas hydraulic fracturing (fracking) leases on state land was forwarded this week to the desk of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. The Republican governor has 10 days after receiving House Bill 308 to either sign it into law or veto it. Read the arguments for and against this legislation in the full Nuclear Newswire article. https://lnkd.in/gmz63iyR

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has announced that it plans to build a fusion power plant, named ARC, at the James River Industrial Park in Chesterfield County, Va.—and that it expects to be the first company to make fusion power available at grid scale. Identifying a site is “the longest lead time part of building a power plant,” said CFS chief executive officer Bob Mumgaard, in a blog post. Now, CFS has found a site owned by Dominion Energy and located near a retiring coal plant. #Nuclear #NuclearEnergy #Fusion #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/dqaw_bEm

I was pleased to present the American Nuclear Society Landis Public Communications and Education Award to Steve Rea in person last week at the Energy Explorium visitor center next to the beautiful McGuire Nuclear Station, which you can see in the background. Note: I am the handsome one, in the hat. Steve earned the award based on his tireless and effective efforts to promote nuclear energy and technology in North Carolina, including founding the North Carolina Nuclear Advisory Board. I received the award on his behalf at the ANS Winter Meeting and passed it along at a fitting location, courtesy of Duke Energy.

Uchenna Ezibe, Sr. Manager of STEM at ANS, is just as excited as we are about inspiring the next generation of scientists! These cloud chamber kits bring nuclear science to life, letting students see the effects of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation in real-time. Our mission? To make nuclear education accessible and available to every school in the country—one cloud chamber kit at a time. #STEMEducation #NuclearScience #InspiringFutureScientists

A drone targeted and damaged an official vehicle of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on December 10 as it traveled toward the front line in eastern Ukraine during a rotation of IAEA teams at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP). In a video message, IAEA director general Rafael Mariano Grossi condemned the strike as an “unacceptable” attack on IAEA staff working to prevent a nuclear accident during a military conflict. The armored vehicle was carrying one driver and one security officer who were both unharmed when the vehicle was hit at 2:05 pm local time, but the rear of the vehicle was “destroyed,” according to an IAEA update.
