It was a brisk December day for an Annum tour of two of our New York projects! First up was Emma Willard School’s Alice Dodge Wallace ’38 Center for the Performing Arts in Troy. This project – currently in construction with Consigli Construction Co., Inc. – repurposes the circa 1910 Alumnae Chapel, adding a new below-grade building and connecting both to the existing studio arts building. Our team then traveled to Poughkeepsie to see the four-story Dyson Center at Marist College, recently completed with Pike Construction Services. This project for the School of Management and School of Social and Behavioral Sciences incorporates a new building with portions of an existing building, preserving resources and limiting the new building’s footprint. We are grateful to offer a culture of hands-on learning through these organized tours, knowing they are an incredible learning and team building experience for all.

Today is the day! Best of luck to Katie Gerner, AIA, LEED AP, Juan Villafane, Troy Thompson AIA LEED AP, and U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations' Fred Poehler and Jorge Salcedo on their dynamic session - The Major Rehabilitation and Expansion of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece - at Docomomo International in Santiago!
We are thrilled to announce that at this year's Docomomo International Conference on December 11, 2024 from 15:30 to 17:30 CLST at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urban Studies. OBO's Fred Poehler and Jorge Salcedo will host a session on the intersection of diplomacy and stewardship featuring SmithGroup, Annum Architects (Formerly Ann Beha Architects), and Krueck Sexton Partners. The deep dive discussion will explore what defines a modernist resource and how varied preservation, renewal, and rehabilitation approaches contribute to achieving stewardship objectives. From an owner's perspective, the session will raise important questions about how OBO's mission and goals shape planning decisions and examine the feedback loop between projects and industry standards. From a diplomat's viewpoint, panelists will explore the profound impact of cultural resources and how their stewardship strengthens international relations. From an architect's standpoint, the session will spark a dialogue about the responsibility of shaping the future of existing modernist buildings, delving into the delicate balance between forward-looking programming and performance considerations while preserving the historic architectural fabric. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion that brings together diverse perspectives on stewardship, diplomacy, and the future of modernist architecture! Looking forward to engaging with experts from around the globe. #DocomomoInternationalConference2024 #StewardshipAndDiplomacy #BuildingDiplomacy #CulturalHeritage #CulturalPreservation #ModernistArchitecture #OBO #BuildingTheFuturePreservingThePast #CulturalStewardship U.S. Department of State

We are proud to see our work with University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education featured in Architectural Record! Thank you to Annum president Philip Chen and senior associate Josh Aisenberg for their contributions to this story, thoughtfully written by Ian Volner. P. “It’s a terra-cotta precinct,” says architect Josh Aisenberg. For sheer concision, the two-word description of the rough, ruddy campus architecture of the University of Pennsylvania seems right on the money—and it should be, given the source. Aisenberg, a senior associate at Boston-based Annum Architects (Formerly Ann Beha Architects), heard the phrase, by way of a third party, from no less an authority than Amy Gutmann, Penn’s longest-serving president and a supporter of Annum’s new project at Penn when it first got underway some six years ago. Now complete, Annum’s renovation and expansion of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (GSE) adds yet another paean to red earthenware to West Philadelphia. Connecting a pair of 1960s buildings at the southwest corner of Walnut and 37th Streets, the new volume provides additional classroom space, enhanced accessibility, and a degree of visual consistency to the school, which had formerly been spread out across multiple sites. Annum president and principal Philip Chen quotes another Penn administrator—the GSE’s own dean, Pam Grossman—when he says the objective was to create “one GSE,” forging a distinct architectural identity for a program that had long lacked it. Located on historic Meetinghouse Hill in Dorchester, the new Engine 17 is the second firehouse to be built in Boston over 40 years. Sited on a former parking lot next to the existing firehouse, our ground-up facility with the Boston Fire Department and the City of Boston Public Facilities Department (PFD) was designed to benefit the health and wellness of firefighters. The new high-performing building is targeting LEED Silver, with features include energy-efficient boilers and large windows to introduce daylight into program spaces and create a welcoming entrance. Second-floor spaces include an open-concept kitchen and dayroom, fitness area, lockers, and sleeping and office spaces. We were thrilled to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Engine 17 Firehouse with Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke, PFD officials, firefighters, and community members. Thank you to our construction partners J&J Contractors, Inc and the rest of our team! It was an honor to celebrate at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, New England Chapter (ICAA) Bulfinch Awards for our work with the Boston Athenaeum! Our lively evening at the Harvard Club of Boston included excellent conversation with industry peers and an acceptance speech by Annum’s Robert A. Carroll, AIA for our award in the Community-Oriented Design category. His words reflected the Boston Athenaeum’s dedication to serving and including the community through its renovation and expansion. The Bulfinch Awards honor the legacy of Boston's early Federal architect, Charles Bulfinch, America’s first native-born architect and the designer of the Massachusetts State House. This program recognizes the work of designers and artists who preserve and advance the classical tradition in New England. Thank you to the ICAA-NE for a memorable evening, including Chapter President Nancy E. Berry and Chapter Director Sarah Macdonald. Congratulations to the Boston Athenaeum, Ann Beha, Consigli Construction, and our entire project team! ann beha | Consigli Construction Co., Inc. | Thornton Tomasetti | Allied Engineering Services, Inc. | Richard Burck Associates, Inc | Acentech | Available Light | Anna Farrington | Anton Grassl | Kiln Brook LLC

We are thrilled to be working with the EcoTarium on this community-oriented project! Congratulations to our awesome team on this important milestone 🏗️
The EcoTarium held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for its new 8,320 square foot Stoddard Exhibition Hall! The Stoddard Exhibition Hall will host the museum’s first large-scale national exhibit in early 2026, The Secret World of Elephants, developed by the American Museum of Natural History in New York. This exhibit will offer Central New England residents access to major science and nature exhibitions for the first time in the museum’s 200-year history. Very happy to be part of this amazing team and to witness this incredible milestone for the museum, right here in Worcester!

We believe in the important role that museums have in our communities, celebrating diverse perspectives and preserving cultural identity. We are honored to continue our work with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston on this exciting project! 🖼️ 🎨
Exciting things are on the horizon for modern art at the MFA! We're thrilled to announce a major renovation project that will create four new galleries dedicated to the MFA's collection of 20th-century art 🤩 A gallery highlighting 20th-century sculpture is expected to open in late spring of 2025, followed by three additional galleries in the fall of 2025. We're incredibly grateful to the Wyss Foundation, whose $25 million gift supports not only the galleries, but also two new staff positions for a curator and a conservator.
