Another exciting milestone for our Tropicana renewables project which is due to be completed by early 2025.
Wind turbines at Tropicana are spinning for the first time! Two of our four 6MW Goldwind turbines have been successfully commissioned and are now delivering power to AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s and Regis Resources Ltd’s Tropicana gold mine. The 12MW of wind power joins our 24MW solar farm and 13MW grid-stabilising battery system, which both came online in September and have been helping to power operations ever since. The renewable energy expansion is set to slash the power station’s annual diesel and gas consumption by 96% and 50% respectively, reducing the mine’s carbon emissions by around 65,000 tonnes each year. The last two wind turbines are expected to be commissioned and fully operational in the next couple of months. #renewableenergy #windpower #wind #energytransition #fossilfuelfree #fuellingthefuture

AngloGold Ashanti marks World AIDS Day 2024. The World Health Organization says the world can end AIDS – if everyone’s rights are protected. With human rights at the centre, with communities in the lead, the world can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens to champion the right to health by addressing the inequalities that hinder progress in ending AIDS. Through organizing the Kili Challenge - where a group of mountain bike riders ride round the base of Africa’s highest peak or climbers summit Mount Kilimanjaro – in Tanzania, AngloGold Ashanti’s Geita Mine, working with other stakeholders, raises money to fight HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. A notable achievement since the first Challenge has been the construction of the Moyo wa Huruma Orphanage Centre in Geita. The Moyo wa Huruma Centre is one of the main beneficiaries of funds raised by the Challenge. The money raised through sponsorship and participant fees goes to the GGM Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV & AIDS Trust. The Trust, together with key stakeholders including the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), has supported more than 100 projects across Tanzania since it was founded in 2002. It works with local and international NGOs and government agencies to ensure a holistic approach to tackling HIV/AIDS. https://lnkd.in/d-9k5PME #WorldAIDSDay

AngloGold Ashanti as a responsible gold mining company with the purpose of Mining to Empower People and Advance Societies, and as a member of the WGC, welcomes the publication of the WGC’s 2023 data update on The Social and Economic Contribution of Gold Mining. Using 2023 data, this update is the third in an annual series that demonstrates the sustained social and economic contribution of WGC members in the countries in which they operate. In addition to the report, the WGC released 21 country profiles – showcasing country-specific social and economic contributions – for countries where two or more members operate. In 2023, WGC member companies directly contributed a total of US$60.4bn to host economies. This comprised US$41.1bn of payments to in-country suppliers, US$11.0bn in employee wages and US$8.3bn in tax payments to governments. On top of this, in 2023, contributions of over US$650mn were made to local communities and Indigenous groups in the 36 countries of operations. In 2023, WGC member companies directly employed close to 213,000 people and over 160,000 contractors. Every job in the gold mining industry also supports six more indirect jobs in the supply chain or almost ten more if induced jobs are included (as per 2021 Report The Social and Economic Contribution of Gold Mining). Recent company efforts to train and develop local skills, as opposed to bringing in expatriates, has led to an impressive 95% of employees coming from the host country of operation.
