Ever sipped a delicious Vietnamese coffee at Winter Swan or browsed stunning flora at Stacy K's? Shared a Korean sit-down platter at Nosh or swung by for a meeting at Truth Collective? Maybe you've envied a friend's chic loft at the Factory. Every one of these buildings is tied into an ultra-efficient geothermal system fed by 31 geothermal wells between Russel and Elton street in downtown Rochester. Business owners and developers alike can be daunted by geothermal's upfront costs and the complexities of adaptive re-use, but Luke Dutton says, “The end result is totally worth it." Everything from the wine room at Nosh to the vintage flower cooler at Stacy K's run on the geothermal system. Geothermal heating and cooling results in healthy air, quiet heating and cooling, low utility bills for tenants, comfortable temperatures year-round, and low carbon emissions. None of this would be possible without the Dutton's leadership. Read the full story of Dutton Properties' electrification journey: https://hubs.la/Q02-M1-H0
About us
AMPED supports the transition of organizations’ vehicles and buildings to technologies powered by carbon-free electricity, instead of fossil fuels. Since May 2019, a partnership of 20+ prestigious local institutions representing over 10 sectors have been working together to connect organizations throughout the nine-county Genesee/Finger Lakes region with electrification tools, resources, and inspiration. The overarching goal of this initiative is to mitigate the impacts of climate change by reducing carbon pollution caused by burning fossil fuels. Climate change poses numerous harms and risks to our community, including the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events, food insecurity, the spread of vector-borne diseases, poor indoor and outdoor air quality, toxic algae blooms, and damage to both private and public property. This campaign promotes the use of carbon-free electricity to meet our energy needs because the majority of local emissions come from building heating systems and vehicles. AMPED is here to encourage organization leaders to join the clean energy movement and to spread the word that electrification is good for business, and our planet.

“All environmental concerns eventually just become health concerns,” Michael Waller, Director of Sustainability, Rochester Regional Health. Conditions such as asthma have a direct correlation to air quality, so installing 90 charging points was a good start. “We’re in the business of treating that damage, so this is really just a core piece of what we do on a day-to-day basis." “Once we installed these stations, a lot of people went out and got electric vehicles and started using them,” says Waller. “There is one physician who said that they saw the charging station at their location and every day they'd walk in the building, they'd feel guilty about how they're damaging the earth, driving their large SUV,” Waller adds. “And then they went out and bought an electric vehicle as a result of seeing those stations.” Read the full story of Rochester Regional Health's electrification journey: https://hubs.la/Q02_pWXK0

This apartment complex went with geothermal for the benefit of their tenants and their budget, and you could too! “The Autumn Gardens geothermal heat pump system was a good investment for CLHA and its residents, saving money on utility bills and completing drilling with minimal disruption to tenants. Before installing a geothermal heat pump system, it is critical to conduct adequate research up front and choose the right engineering firm with experience to design for your situation." With lower prices on EVs and lots of incentives available, especially through the Inflation Reduction Act, more and more private and government-owned fleets are making the switch to electric. And it makes sense, since RMI found that across multiple scenarios, it’s cheaper to own and operate light- and medium-duty electric vehicles than gas-powered vehicles.
