This week, I dove back into the HR Community by rejoining Portland HR Management Association (PHRMA) and attending the latest event and I am thankful I did. Not only did I meet incredible individuals who share my passion for positive change, but I was also reminded of the power of being in a room full of people who are driven to make things better. As HR leaders, we care deeply about the well-being of our employees. But are we doing enough to secure our own financial futures and truly understand the retirement landscape we’re guiding our teams through? Ellen Schultz's book, "Retirement Heist," exposes how some companies, often unknowingly, have made retirement decisions that benefited the organization more than the employees. It's a wake-up call. Traditional retirement plans, like 401(k)s, may not always align with what’s truly best for employees or ourselves. Seriously...when was the last time your 401k provider reached out to you to ensure alignment with your retirement goals? In a time when retirement security is at risk for millions, HR has a direct link to our employees and their retirement... We are often their only source of retirement resources through work, and we send them to external vendors for guidance. But have the ability & responsibility to do more. Imagine if we could empower employees to explore options that better align with their unique goals. Here are a few questions we need to ask ourselves: ♦ Are we relying solely on traditional retirement plans that might be limiting our financial growth? ♦Have we fully explored options like self-directed retirement accounts or whole life insurance policies that could open new doors for financial freedom? ♦ Are we equipped with the knowledge to help our employees navigate these same decisions for their own financial well-being? Most people, HR professionals included, haven’t been taught about alternatives beyond the standard 401(k). But as leaders, it’s crucial that we start asking questions and doing our research. Our financial futures, and those of our employees, are too important to leave in the hands of outdated or one-size-fits-all solutions. The most impactful step we can take today as HR leaders is to get curious. By educating ourselves, we can make informed choices that align with our retirement goals and advocate for our employees to do the same.
