Although cigarette smoking rates have been declining for decades, cigarette smoking remains the most preventable cause of serious illness and death. Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths in the US every year, and about 3 out of every 10 cancer deaths. No matter your age or how long you’ve been smoking, quitting improves health, both immediately and over the long term. The American Cancer Society is encouraging people who smoke to start day one of their journey to a smoke-free life on the Great American Smokeout.
