Hearing the news about a 1,000-point drop in the market might lead you to panic and make unwise investment decisions. However, it is important to remember that these large point drops might represent only a small percentage drop. Dramatic headlines make a bigger splash than reporting less sensational news. In his most recent blog, Saul Baumann, CFP®, AIF® discusses market volatility and unpacks the difference between percentage and magnitude. If you wonder how this affects you, click on the link below to catch "The Disciplined Investor Blog." https://lnkd.in/g4ZyZ9H #marketvolatility #magnitude #marketpercentage #investing

Four Tips to Prepare for Natural Disaster In his latest blog, Derek Van Calligan, CFP®, CIMA®, AIF® provides four tips that can help you prepare financially for a natural disaster, no matter where you live. During the fall of 2024, Hurricane Helene moved inland from Georgia to North Carolina, causing immense damage from flooding. Soon after, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida. Even if you do not live in a hurricane prone area, other disasters such as tornadoes, floods, forest fires or earthquakes could hit depending on where you live in the world. A few ounces of these preventive measures may forestall pounds of future strife. To learn about four tips to be financially prepared for disaster, catch Derek’s blog by clicking on the link: https://lnkd.in/g5w5TM6S #financialpreparedness #naturaldisaster #wealthmanagement

When we reflect on the concept of discipline, we often think about losing those five extra pounds or sticking to a sensible exercise routine. We often forget that investing takes a degree of discipline as well. What kind of discipline is involved? Investors do not always make sound investment decisions. Human emotions unwittingly cause investors to fail through self-destructive behaviors. These negative behavior could interfere with achieving optimal returns. However, sticking to the discipline of an informed, logical, and evidence-based financial plan can help mitigate the risk of making faulty decisions such as selling out of fear or panic. We can reduce emotional decision-making by adopting an investment structure that can reduce the number of decisions we need to make. A personal trainer can help us stay accountable in our workout regimen. In a similar way, your financial advisor is a financial “fitness coach” who can help you stick to your long-term plan. #evidencebased #fiduciary #disciplinedinvesting

People often ask us, “What does Allodium mean?” or “Why did you name your firm Allodium?” We spent some time looking for a name that would reflect our position as an independent, fee-only investment advisor. Allodium is a historical legal term that refers to land owned independently, without obligations to a feudal lord or government. We believe that the concept of allodium represents the philosophical foundation of our firm’s fiercely independent approach to investment advice. We established our firm in 2005 because we wanted to provide a high standard of fiduciary care in serving our clients, independent from banks, brokerage firms, and other service providers. Our goal was to reduce biases to help us always act in the best interest of our clients. #feeonly #allodium #fiduciary

Allodium was thrilled to host acclaimed documentary filmmaker and author Mike Day (pictured right) for an in-person event on Thursday, October 24. Mike took the guests on a captivating journey through his personal experiences and adventures. Mike's stories focused on the unforgettable places, extraordinary history, remarkable people he encountered and the significant lessons about humanity he learned along the way. He also shared artifacts from his travels and read excerpts from his book, "The World Has a Big Backyard." Copies of the book were available free of charge to all attendees. To go along with Mike Day’s travel-based presentation, Allodium served a variety of hearty international appetizers such as pupusas from El Salvador, a selection of imported cheeses and meats, and Hmong noodles with four different sauces. Imported wines, craft beers, and soft drinks were also served. #travel #mikeday #theworldhasabigbackyard
