Ricardo Inácio recently presented the paper "Meta-learning and Data Augmentation for Stress Testing Forecasting Models" (joint work with Vitor Cerqueira and Marilia Barandas) at the Discovery Science Conference in Pisa, Italy. The work presented is part of his ongoing M.Sc. thesis on Informatics Engineering at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto in collaboration with Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS. The work is being developed as part of one of our lines of work in the Center for Responsible AI and the AISym4MED - Horizon Europe project, namely the generation of data for stress testing algorithms. In this case, Ricardo synthesizes realistic univariate time series that lead to models with high forecasting error and then applies a metalearning approach to characterize those time series. At the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, we get some of the best students in Portugal, and I believe our responsibility is to develop their skills beyond what traditional programs offer. In the last few years, we have funded some of these students to develop projects where they learn how to do research in ML, and, not surprisingly, the results are often outstanding. For me, it's really amazing to see the maturity of these students, besides their technical and scientific skills, and I look forward to working with new students as well as continuing the collaboration with the current ones, including Ricardo.
