  • This week, the AIS Doctoral Student College hosted the Doctoral Student Corner at ICIS – The International Conference on Information Systems. We want to begin with a huge thank you to everyone who made these events possible with us! On Tuesday 17th, the Faculty Roundtable 💬 gathered fourteen junior and senior faculty members to discuss the theme, “Does Persistence Pay Off? Managing Challenges and Pressures in PhD Studies” with students. Finally, the Student Hangout & Conclusion provided an opportunity to share conference highlights and celebrate new friendships 🌟. In addition, the Doctoral Student Corner Lounge 🛋️☕ proved to be a valuable space for doctoral students to unwind and connect with peers amid the busy conference days. Publishing in top-tier (A*) journals is a significant goal for many researchers. What does it take to succeed? Drawing on their extensive experience, our distinguished professors provided practical strategies and advices. Here are some key takeaways: 🔍 Literature Review: Setting the Stage A literature review is more than summarizing past studies; it demonstrates understanding, identifies gaps, and frames your contribution. ✔️ Avoid confirmation bias by exploring works that present broader theoretical perspectives. ✔️ Move beyond "gap spotting" and address tensions or conflicting views in the literature. 🎯 Theoretical Contributions: A Moving Target Theoretical contributions, while challenging, are critical for A* journals. ✔️ Journals value research that resolves inconsistencies in the literature or offers revolutionary insights. ✔️ Be mindful of trends—topics like e-commerce or AI may shift over time. 🥜 Methodology: Aligning with the Research Question Your methodology should directly address your research question. ✔️ Combining methodologies can offer broader perspectives but requires strong justification. ✔️ Keep explanations concise, focusing on how methods serve your objectives. 🖋 Results and Discussion: Engaging with the Journal's Audience Findings should align with the journal’s focus and address your research question. ✔️ If most citations are from marketing journals, explain why your work fits that domain. 🤝 Managing Reviewer Feedback and Rejections Handling reviewer feedback is crucial. ✔️ Address comments constructively and see rejections as opportunities to - Stay problem-focused, using feedback to refine your work. 🌟 General Advice ✔️  Follow your interests rather than blindly chasing trends. ✔️ Use AI tools as support but maintain a human-centric approach. We hope these reflections spark ideas for your own research! Feel free to share your thoughts or additional insights in the comments below. See you all in #ICIS2024, Bangkok!!
