So, how’d you do? Last week, we posted a photo of a small snippet of an actual aircraft and asked you to guess what plane it was. If you haven’t guessed, the image was a closeup of the faceted air intake and sharp, radar- wave-reflecting angles of America’s first operational stealth fighter: the F-117 Nighthawk. If this one flew under your radar, no worries, it was designed to do just that. Next month, we’ll bring you a new challenge. So, stay sharp and bone up on your aircraft until then. #WeAreAFCS #TotalForce #AviationLovers #PlaneSpotting #StealthFighter

KEN "Wolverine" KNOX Civilian Pilot Career Field Administrator Years with AFCS: 8 Q: What inspired you to join the Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS)? A: The opportunity to continue to teach kids how to fly for the Air Force. Q: How does your Operations Career Field team role contribute to the AFCS Mission? A: As the Subject Matter Expert for Civilian Pilots, I work with leadership to recruit and retain civilian pilots who perform a wide range of mission-critical work. With the ongoing shortage of ADAF pilots, I have provided civilian pilot options that continue the mission and simultaneously allow active-duty Air Force (ADAF) pilots to stay in combat-related positions. I work with the Operations Career Field Manager to provide analysis of ongoing proposals and initiatives to help the Air Force shift resources where they are needed. Q: Tell me about a time when you knew what you were doing was making a difference and contributing to the Air Force’s mission. A: Because the commercial aviation sector has become popular in terms of hiring and increased compensation for pilots, the civilian service has been challenged to become competitive for talent. As such, AETC has experienced a decade-long shortage of simulator instructor pilots, directly impacting our ability to produce ADAF pilots. I had the good fortune to work with leadership at 19 Air Force and AETC to secure their authority to pay a substantial retention incentive for simulator instructors at five bases across the command. These professional and dedicated Airmen, who often have more than 30 to 40 years of experience as pilots, were making anywhere from $80,000 to $200,000 less than their commercial aviation counterparts. I was told by the TRSS Simulator Supervisor for the F-22 Simulator training unit that my efforts for just one unit directly contributed to the retention of 9 individuals for a total of just over 15 man-years. Q: Why do you stay with AFCS? A: As the civilian pilot career field administrator, I get to help units meet their hiring goals, work to help pilots advance in their careers, and have a wide degree of independence in how I can advance the Air Force Civil Service mission to support our national security issues. I have been blessed with great supervisors and teammates who are all the definition of Airmen/warriors. Q: How would you like history to remember you? A: I want to be the person who helped get the active-duty Air Force to truly think of civilian pilots as part of the Total Force. I want to be remembered for helping find a way to keep Air Force pilots in the Air Force beyond the Guard and Reserve capacity when they decide to transition into civilian careers. Most of all, I would like to be remembered as the person who played a part in helping the Air Force reach its production goals. I believe in the Civil Service Airman!
