Last week, Agtegra Cooperative acquired the assets of UPI Petroleum, a c-store and bulk fuel and propane business in Milbank, South Dakota. “We are excited to announce the acquisition of UPI Petroleum, which represents a significant step forward in our commitment to serving rural communities with energy solutions. This Thanksgiving season, we’re filled with gratitude for so many things. But above all, we are deeply thankful for our farmers, employees, industry partners, and communities. Wishing everyone a safe and joyful holiday weekend, with appreciation for the year past and excitement for the year ahead.

Safety is at the core of everything we do, including how we serve our communities. So, when Dr. Matt Owens of Redfield Community Memorial Hospital came to us with a plan in 2021 to help fill the gap in access to rural emergency medical care, we were quick to say yes. Alongside the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, Dr. Owens trained over 100 Agtegra employees on three life-saving processes - Narcan administration, AED operation and Stop the Bleed - and provided trainees with vehicle ditch kits to equip them with the tools needed to provide lifesaving care until EMS personnel can arrive to a scene. This training - now known as the Dakota Responders program - is one that has forever impacted how we support safety in our communities. In November 2023, Dr. Owens passed away, leaving a great legacy for his efforts in training individuals in early response techniques in rural areas and bringing awareness to the need for additional EMS resources in rural communities. One of Dr. Owens’ final offerings to Agtegra was the donation of 80 ditch kits from funding he received as the recipient of the COPIC Humanitarian Award honoring a physician for volunteer medical services and contributions to their community. Last month, Dr. Owens was recognized again for his contributions by the South Dakota EMS Association with the EMS Lifetime Membership Award. Agtegra is incredibly grateful for everything Dr. Owens has contributed to the health and safety of our communities and the impact he has made on our organization.

Today, we pause to express our thanks for the sacrifices made by veterans, including our own employees, member-owners, and members of our communities. To all veterans—thank you for your service to our country.
