About us
Supported by the European Commission and SESAR Joint Undertaking, AEROPLANE project aims at investigating new ways in reducing aviation impact on climate, as well as find new solutions to make aviation more resilient to the more frequent and extreme weather conditions in Europe, such as high temperatures and heat waves. AEROPLANE wants to create proof-of-concept (PoC) climate services for aviation stakeholders to foster the transition towards a net-zero and resilient aviation sector. Using knowledge on climate, AEROPLANE will provide insightful metrics and data to enable ATM decision-making, such as flight planning, that is climate-savvy and takes into consideration weather and climate conditions.

🚀 Exciting Project Update! 🚀 I’m delighted to share that today we had a highly productive and successful Project Technical Review Meeting for Project AEROPLANE, an ER SESAR 3 project under the Green Deal Flagship. 🌍✈️ The project is making excellent progress towards its goals while adhering to all contractual and administrative obligations. 💪 AEROPLANE tackles two fundamental questions: *How much does aviation contribute to climate change? =>with special focus on contrail formation impact and its mitigations. *How much does climate change impact aviation? =>with special focus on extreme events’ impact on operations, such as decreased lift during take-off and RPAS operations. During the meeting, we reviewed the significant progress in these areas and uncovered important findings, for a flavour of this … >>regarding climate impact metrics: While different metrics yield varying figures for the climate impact of flights (CO2 plus non-CO2), they practically always highlight the key contributors!!! >>regarding Airport Operations: Increasing temperatures and heatwaves are affecting airports more frequently. And for airports with short runways, weight restrictions to ensure take-off lift might require reducing up to ≈10 passengers per flight in the future!!! A big thank you to AEROPLANE partners for their efforts and excellent results so far. A recent report from the University of Cambridge Aviation Impact Accelerator project highlights 4 critical steps required over the next 5 years to help the global #aviation reach #NetZero emissions by 2050.🔜💡 The report warns that the #AirTransport is still "dangerously off track" and that immediate action is crucial to avoid missing the opportunity for transformation.
